my dd is unable to take from a bottle and has an NG feeding tube in place. We are now moving her onto using a training cup and have started weaning ..she is 19 weeks old. Has anyone else had to use a training cup so early and aslo how long did it take you to transitiion only on to a cup so bottle isn't used at all???

dd started using a doidy cup at 4 months.

luath · 09/01/2007 22:22

dd tried doidy cup and milk went everywhere! We're having some succeess though with a regular feeding cup by tomee tippee and dd is taking 40-70 mls at 3 feeds per day now. remaing feeds go down the tube but this is progress at least! Drs never did come up with a diagnosis....everything was checked out and all results showed nothing ....i personally think she had really really bad silent reflux undiagnosed which casued bottle ferusal and ultimately she's now unable to suck as she's taught herself not to! I'm just praying that in time as she grows bigger she'll master the feeding cup and be able to take all her feeds via the cup and then the tube can come out....I guess though this could take a few months....but we're optomistic we will get rid of the tube before not too long! thanks for rememebring me and all your support

Am really interested that silent reflux may have led to bottle refusal for some of you.

I think maybe that is an issue for my LO. Up to 4 months she took a bottle well but suddenly stopped, it's like she forgot how to suck - or refused to. That is when the silent reflux really had kicked in. I was certain there was a connection. She also refuses a dummy now when she used to have one early on.

Very strange. Does the sucking actually make the reflux worse or is it just that the baby thinks it does!

Thanks. It may have been teething - she definately chews for england. I dont know if teething can put them off sucking - can it? I suppose it might do, makes sense in a way.

She has gaviscon regularly but still sometimes has feeds where she pulls on and off and cries.

Kamikayzed...totally know what you mean...sounds like we have very similar LOs! I too feel bad for wishing away her baby years as feeding is such a nightmare! I hate the NG tube with a passion but know she has to have it for the next few months, when she's older we'll certainly have some stories to tell her! I too think my LO is teething big time....loads of drooling and biting all the time. She bites madly on my finger but won't entertain sucking anything....she never took a dummy as she just wouldn't suck on it! she's recently taken to sucking on her grow bag too. The funny thing is though she is a wonderful baby in every other way and also sleeps well now and is so interactive and chatty.....but will she feed normally!! Am now having to wean her early as she has the dreaded tube but although that's been going well on the whole...today and yesterday she's refused all the yummy purees I've given her despite liking them in the past! Hopefully this is just a phase and she'll go back to purees tomorrow! ....Roll on those toddler years!

Hi Kamikayzed...good to hear from you again, this is our first LO! Not exactly how i imagined parenthood to be! On the flip side though any other LOs should be easier than this! ....sleep wise though she's suddenly got very good! I put how down in her cot with her mobile moving overhead and she cries that tired cry for 10 mins then falls asleep! I know I'm very lucky with her sleeping but I'd pay handsomely for her to also feed as well!! Its so good to hear from you....sounds like we've really similar problems feeding only I have the added tube senario but hopefully that will go in time once I get her spoon feeding or finger feeding better....like you I'm kinda going down the BLW route as well...tried her with little bits of philadelphia cheese on my finger yesterday and that went down very well! ...still have to do spoon feeding though to try and get volume into her but I guess will just take time. THANK YOU so much for all your support...its been great hearing your stories.
