bottles in fridge?

As a general rule I thought you don't put food in the fridge until it has cooled down to room temperature at least. So when I make up ds's bottles we leave them out for about 40 minutes until putting them in the fridge. But Penelope Leach says "Cool made-up milk quickly, preferably by putting it into
the body of the fridge while it is still hot". So should I be putting the bottles straight into the frdige after preparing them?

They don't sterilise in Germany either. My sister couldn't find me anything but a little two bottle sterilizer (that took about an hour!!) when I went over there, so used mic bags.

The 'rules' regarding food hygiene have changed, as I found out when re-doing my certificate. It is OK to put hot stuff into the fridge, including bottles. We had a major discussion at college (childcare course!) about it, as most of us are mums and we all thought you had to let them cool down. So Penelope is right!

The advice in Germany though is to NEVER EVER prepare feeds in advance, because of bacteria developing. German babies must have weaker stomachs...

I have to use Omneo comfort which u have to add to hot water so cannot do any of these suggestions. It is a pain but my baby is a diff baby since being on Omneo.Cow & Gate were SO helpful when I called them I only wish Id called them 10 wks ago then I may of had a much better start @ being a first time mum.

emkana, I'm a correct in thinking they don't steralise though? Seems strange that they won't make feed in advance but then don't steralise...

I think itmakes sense, they don't sterilise because they don't leave warm milk in the bottle long enough for abcteria to develop IYSWIM.

At least I think this could be an explanation?

Hi, we are off on holiday with our 10 month old and were wondering the best way to steralise baby bottles in the hotel room. Is boiling water enough or can you buy any special stuff? Also what water can I use to mix with the formula? You'd think I'd know all this stuff seeing as I already have a 3 year old but I think motherhood has done some funny things to my memory!!
Thanks.

jmum6 · 28/03/2006 11:06

Haven't read whole thread so sorry if i'm repeating! I stand the bottles in water for about 20mins, and I change the water once.

Charlie76 - Are you going for long? We went away for 4 days recently and took those steri - bottle things and ready made cartons of milk. It was expensive but bliss! Well worth the money just to have a few days where I didn't have to wash or sterilise a bottle, or make up feeds. :o

You can buy travel cold water sterilising bags from Mothercare or a chemist - just add water to the premeasured tablet and hang over a sink or shower and submerge the bottles etc for half an hour. After 24 hours you empty the bag and use another. If you are boiling the water anyway local drinking water is normally fine or a low sodium mineral water (in France Evian is amrked as suitable).

Charlie76 · 28/03/2006 13:18

Thanks for that - I am off to the chemist now.

peaches27 · 01/04/2006 19:18

Reading all this with interest as we are going on a short caravan break soon. If you use Evian do you boil it still?

Mfer · 05/04/2006 12:35

Charlie and Peaches if you dont want to faff about with sterilising bottles - use the playtex pre-sterilised bottle liners.
The bottles are around £4 and a box of liners is about £3 (80 or 100 in a box I think) you can use Evian to make up the feeds and if you want to warm it stand it in a jug hot of tap water.
The teats just need dropping in boiled water once a week and the rest of the time hot soapy water. You dont need to worry about the bottle as it doesnt come in contact with the milk.
The cheapest place to buy is here as there only charge what it cost them to post and you should get it next day. \link{www.infantcaredirect.co.uk\this}

Hiya,
Evian is the only water that is ok for making formula with. Mineral and sodium content too high in others. Oh and you shouldnt boil mineral water, including evian, as it alters its mineral makeup and sodium content (same way you shouldn't reboil water)

Some babies HATE the steribottles so try em out before you go - the teats are very soft and some cant deal with it. Had a friend who spent a week washing up and reusing 1 bottle. LOL

At 10 months, I would worry too much about sterlising, just wash up really well. Or just take a bottle of milton and use a bucket.
