Hi all. Just after a little advice please. I'm a FTM and my LB is 10 weeks old and formula fed. I am feeding him on demand. He is currently having 7oz every 2hrs up till 10pm, he then wakes around 4am for another 7oz then every 2hrs again. I have tried to let him go a little longer during the day but he just screams and chews on his hand. Am I giving him to much? Should I change him to hungry baby milk to widen the feeding gap? Just worried that I'm over feeding him?

Thanks. X

What does your Hv say?

dementedpixie · 25/02/2016 16:41

What weight is he?

Evander247 · 25/02/2016 16:59

He was weighed 2 weeks ago and was 12lb 5 (8lb born). I have left messages for the HV but not heard back from her. Im really worried as i have worked out thats roughly 70oz in 24hrs.

Does he bring any of it back up?

dementedpixie · 25/02/2016 17:02

He doesn't sound overly massive tbh so it's not as if he is piling on loads of weight. How does he sleep during the day?

Evander247 · 25/02/2016 20:31

He doesn't bring any back up. He sleeps from around 10pm till about 4am. Then he's back up at 6am.

Have you tried a dummy?

I found with my DD i confused tired signals with feed me signals. Sometimes she was just wanting something to suck on for comfort to help her fall asleep. But i would feed her, but she brought it back up Blush overfeeding nervous nellie ftm here as well Dummy really helped.

Worth trying first before changing formula.
Although, i agree with pp that he hasnt put on a HUGE amount of weight on 10weeks.

Also, have you only noticed how much he drinking recently? If so, maybe a growth spurt?

Hi OP, did you hear back from your health visitor about this? I am feeding my 7 week old son 5oz every 3 hours (sometimes he goes 4) and have been worried that I am overfeeding him. I would be interested to know what your health visitor said.

Evander247 · 27/02/2016 21:22

Hi. I did and i went and saw her. She told me that i am miss counting as i was calculating 2hrs from the end of his feed so when i factored in the half hr he takes to have his bottle i am actually feeding every 2.5hrs which She said its fine and so is my DS (phew). She just advised not to up his ounces anymore and as long as he's only getting up for 1 feed in the night its fine. Today i have tried to make him wait 3hrs but he is so unhappy i have decided to drop an ounce instead of making him wait and by doing that it actually works out he is having 1 more bottle per 24hrs but less milk so hopefully that will work out better for him and i get my happy DS back.

unimaginativename13 · 27/02/2016 21:40

OP that is perfectly fine. Do not chance to hungry baby milk.

You make find next week your DS starts dropping feeds.

I would just keep going with it. Chewing hands and just be a sign of comfort and that he's discover hands!
I panicked too at how much milk but the HV said just go with it and it should soon even out and it did.

They only get concerned if baby starts jumping centiles.

Is he satisfied after 7oz? If not up it to 8 and you can also try water. Just stick with it, feeding every 2 hours is normal at this age. My DS probably dropped to 5 feeds around 12 weeks then 4 now he's gone back up.

Summerhayes 5oz bottles every 3 hours is more than normal and no way near over feeding!!

Evander247 · 27/02/2016 22:12

Thank you. I have made 6 oz bottles today and he's only been taking 5oz's and had he's had 6 bottles. He was ill from 4 weeks with a terrible cold and was bringing his bottles back up or not feeding at all, these last 2 weeks he has been feeling better so HV suggested that he could just be making up for those 4 weeks of being ill. Thank you for you kind words and support, its a horrible feeling when you think you are doing wrong by your LO. X
