Which formula to use for a constipated baby?

My 7mo DS is mixed fed - he has 1 or 2 bottles of formula a day, plus we're doing BLW. He has always been a bit constipated, but I'm working on this with a change of formula and, now he's on solids, a bit of baby prunes. Seems to be working.

However, we're coming back to the UK for a 2 week visit on Jan 9th (we live in Zambia), and the Nestle formula he is on won't be available.

Any recommendations?? Plus can you buy formula online, from Boots etc?

Aptimil is supposed to be a good formula for babies with colic, wind and constipation. Although I have never used it myself.
You can buy it online from boots too. I would recommend though, that if you use them, pay for the next day delivery. At the moment they are not charging for standard delivery and because of the courier they are using, orders are arriving very late.

can you not bring enough with you for two weeks? we took fomula for a three week holiday but did use cows milk too as dd1 was 11 months...not an option for you I see. you could always increase the number of bfs too and manage on just 1 bottle a day.

try offering different foods to help

prunes, as you have mentioned, apricots, watery foods too, such as cucumber and melon, also, avoid bananas, they seem to constipate LOs....

will more breast feeds help?

ZamMummy · 28/12/2006 11:34

On re-reading, that looks all wrong - he also bf's 3-4 times a day, sometimes a dream feed as well.

My DS1 was terribly constipated and had to be medically treated in the end! but successfully swapped to Cow and Gate (from SMA) gave warm water on a teaspoon!

choosyfloosy · 28/12/2006 13:20

Have no idea if this really helps, but as you are still bfing as well, my mum always said to make sure I ate lots of prunes, juice etc. Probably a myth but you never know I suppose. [ducks in case this is completely misleading advice]

hana · 28/12/2006 13:22

that is a myth, as what a breastfeeding mother eats has no physical way of gettign into breastmilk!

choosyfloosy · 28/12/2006 13:28

damn [slaps own wrist] sorry

CMac · 28/12/2006 13:29

Another vote for Aptamil here. Really helped dd who was on a similar mixed feeding pattern (changed from SMA)

hana · 28/12/2006 13:33

not too hard i hope floosy!

From what I know, it's best to just keep him on the same formula, or cut down on formula for the trip. Changing formula is best avoided, in general.

Because, from what I know (i.e. from what tiktok and mears say here), changing formula can cause colicy behaviour. Obviously not for every baby, but if a particular formula is working for you, you shouldn't change it if you can avoid it.
