I have just had to start bottle feeding from bf, so i bought the closer to nature bottles which are very wide and have a great nipple like teat. my DD loves these.
The only problem is when im out, how do you warm these up? The standard warmers (avent etc) dont fit this extra wide type bottle.

What do you do?
I am such a novice to bottle feeding, it terrifies me and so at the mo im still mixed feeding.

can you warm bottles up in advance then go out on a journey?
How many of you use the ready made up cartons of formula, or do you use the dried?

I use the avent warmer... squish it in, and fill to the very top, set on 3. I use ready made, as I dont use them alot and its sooooooooooo handy.

QuootiepieTheChristmasAss · 26/12/2006 19:38

Oh, that isnt going out though. Ummm... I think you can warm up, and carry around in a bottle thermal bag for a bit, but can't remember.

re:bottles. I agree with Fio, get some normal ones for when you are out. I wouldn't warm up bottles as warmed up milk officially only keeps for 1 hour at most. At first I used the ready made up cartons of formula when out and about, then I used premeasured dried powder sachets plus cooled boiled water, latterly tap water.

many sympathies - I ended up transferring from boob to bottle and found the whole bottle palaver terrifying, it really isn't when you get the hang of it.

QuootiepieTheChristmasAss · 26/12/2006 19:40

Actually, going out, I think you warm the water (well, cool the boiled) and put into a thermal bottle bag, then when needed, add the power and shake.

So have the water ready in the bottles. And measure out the powder before you go, and put it in a little tub or something.

I always got the babies used to drinking room temperature milk, boil the water, let it cool down and give the feed using the water at whatever temperature it is.
Much easier than flapping around waiting for a warm bottle or risking over heating it in a microwave.

small - i bought a great fisher price flask which comes with a beaker thing as a cover - i use it out and about as well as at night - i think its wide enough for the tt bottles.

small76 · 27/12/2006 20:35

wow thanks for the helpful tips.
Also with ready made milk cartons it says use within one hour.
So if i were to fill abottle with ready made at room temp, then put in a thermal bag (without ice packs) to protect from temp changes. Does this still mean i have to use it within the hour?

And what do you all do at night feeds. Do you all trot down to cold kitchen with crying baby to prepare a feed?

My mind boggles! Only 11 more months lol.

the cartons last until you open them, but only an hour at room temp. there's no point in you bothering to put room temp milk into a thermal bag, it won't make it last any longer. When I used cartons I carried a pair of scissors in my handbag, and poured the milk in when it was needed. With night feeds I had already made up the bottles in advance, so just heated it up for a couple of minutes in a bowl of water. Or it is possible (but not exactly officially approved of) to stick it briefly in the microwave to warm up, shake thoroughly, test on arm before giving it!)
