I think I want to stop

DS is 3 weeks tomorrow and breastfeeding is still so painful I have cried through a couple of feeds the last few days and dread every time he wakes up as I know it will be agony again. 4 midwives and 2
HV's have all told me latch is fine and no tounge tie which I kind of believe as I have had about 4/5 feeds which have been painfree (amazing!!!)

DS also has reflux and hardly sleeps at night and giving him baby gaviscon helps slightly but it is such a faff expressing and sterilising bottles to put the medicine in. He's feeding every 2 hours so amongst feeding & expressing I feel like I do nothing else.

Will the pain go away? I feel so guilty for wanting to stop when I assume the pain is temporary or no one would feed for so long. Formula just seems so tempting right now Sad

Great news :)

It actually took me a good couple of months to really get over all the hurdles - mangled nipples, positioning troubles, mastitis/thrush/ persistent blocked ducts. I was ready to quit but almost overnight it suddenly became really easy and painless and we carried on happily for 10 months.

I would really recommend persevering for another month at least - I found BF so much easier than preparing formula and that was just twice a day, can't imagine what doing it in the middle of the night must be like!

That's amazing news. So pleased for you.

Just wanted to update.

DS has been diagnosed with an upper lip tie now, he can't flare his upper lip at all which was resulting in a poor latch despite everyone telling me it was good and means he is swallowing lots of air and we get a lot of leakage!!

NHS won't snip as he is gaining wait so we are getting it done privately which will hopefully help his acid reflux as well as making feeding more comfortable!!

Frustrating it's taken 4 weeks to get here but so glad there is a soloution which should help both of us Grin

Good news!

That is good news that you've got a diagnosis and a way forward. My DS had a slight lip tie, and I used to flare his lip out gently myself once he had latched on. Is that something you've tried? Might not be possible depending on how tight the tie is.

Good for you for going private. We did the same with DS' tongue tie.

When you get it snipped, they will likely ask you to put him on the boob immediately. Be prepared to have problems latching...it too DS over 24 hours to be able to latch again with ease. He was a week old when we had his snipped.

The people who snipped his tie saw how much trouble we were having immediately after and left us with some tiny syringes and instructions to express a little and syringe feed if need be until the soreness eased and DS latched again (hand express into clean cup then slowly syringe tiny amounts into baby).

I'm sure this won't happen to you but just wanted to share our experience as I was shitting myself that I'd forever ruined BFing after the snip. Taking a little time to heal after the procedure is TOTALLY NORMAL but it can be daunting.
