Hi I have a 13 week old DD. We have had problems with reflux and colic since early on both of which are settling down. However she has become quite constipated and very windy bowel wise(her colic was very much up the way) which is causing her great distress. My G.P rec changing my formula. She also recommended giving small drinks of cooled boiled water.
Can anyone recommend a formula which helped them with similar problem. I use SMA gold at present and this appears to be bunging her up.
She was greast fed exclusively til 6 weeks and mixed fed til 10. On formula only since ten.
I know should probably kept her on breast but personal circumstances made this tricky for me
Any recommendations appriciated.

First, don't beat yourself up. I bfed one of mine but two I had to ffeed - I know there are circumstances that make this necessary.

The issue here is lactose. Try omneo comfort by Cow and Gate as your first choice, and then a lactose-free formula.

HTH!

Thanks for your support, your so right. I breast fed my ds for 5 months with all sorts of latching/breast problems but this time it was what was happening in my life which didn't help.
Have been down to shops and bought the cow and gate comfort to try first.

Thanks

You have to be careful with infant gaviscon according to my dr it cause heart problems if it is used for too long a period. I had all the same problems with DD as you are having and no amount of infacol, gaviscon etc would sort it out. We started off on SMA gold and then went on to the green cow and gate stuff (can't remember the name of it now). She managed to keep that down better than the SMA stuff.

Hi BR.
My ds who is 17 weeks now was diagnosed with reflux at 2 weeks.
Luckily we have a fab HV, GP and Paed and they told me to give him a formula called Enfamil. Its thicker than normal formula so therefore it stays down. We do have to get this on prescription but we get 16 tins at a time as they are only 400g (half the size of a tin of SMA) and have them on repeat prescription. Our local chemist orders it in the same day for us.
He still vomits but not anywhere near as often as when he was on the SMA.

He has started to wake in the night again atm and it is sometimes recommended that reflux babies are weaned at 16 weeks to help strengthen the Sphincter. Sadly we tried ds and he is certainly not ready for it. Our HV then said to try a second stage formula like Aptimil on his last bottle before bedtime. We tried this and SMA 2nd stage and he vomited both so its obvious that he can't cope with the consistency of the milk. We were also told to try water but he can't keep that down either lol!

There is another thicker formula that you can get on prescription which begins with an N but I cant remember the name of it.
Speak to your GP and tell them you want to try it. Another plus is that you dont have to pay for it too

When you make up the feeds, make it up to the milliletre and not ounzes. When going by the oz, although easier, as baby gets bigger, less water is used and can cause constipation (I saw this on TV - Norlington Nannies and was great advice).

I use Denticox colic drops which works great for me, but lots of others swear by Colife. It's expensive (about £10), but you can get it on prescription if you have a nice doctor.

Good luck!!

Thanks everybody, loads of great advice. Thats interesting re making the feeds up to mil not oz, never knew that thought it worked out the same. Iam trying apitmal 1st at the moment but good to know other options.
Scary re the infant gsviscon think will discuss with gp after christmas.
It's mad with my DS i had opposite problem. He had toddler diaorrhea (how do you spell that!)
Have a fun day tomorrow

Er....of course it works out the same, ml or oz!!

A vol. of water is the same whether you measure in metric or imperial!

Perhaps I have misunderstood?

lulumama · 24/12/2006 14:19

not sure what autumn means re less water as they get older...

one scoop of formula to one ounce of water

so a 6 ounce feed is made of 6 scoops in 6 fluid ounces of water.....water first ,then add the milk..it makes it look as though it is slightly more than 6 ounce feed.but it isn;t..

do not add more or less water, follow the directions on the tin.....

cacaboo · 24/12/2006 14:35

Re water volumes - instructions on the packets tend to equate 1oz = 30ml of water. (At least they did on the ones I used.) That's not quite accurate, in fact 1oz = 28.4ml or something. It's slightly noticable when you get to dealing with bigger bottles. The 180ml line is positioned higher up the bottle than the 6oz line. (How accurate those markings are is another matter....)
