Breast fed baby and infant gaviscon - advice please

My ds has been sick after most feeds for the past 3 weeks, he is 17 weeks old and is exclusively breast fed, sometimes he is sick straight after or during eating which is pale and milky and some times he can be a while after feeding which is usually the 'cottage cheese' type sick. I went to the dr yesterday and told him about the problem I was having. He prescribed infant gaviscon which is fine but a pain to keep making up, he advised 1 sachet after each feed. I feed more than 6 times in 24hrs so I can't give it to him after each feed as he'd be overdoseing on it. Can I make up 6 doses up in the morning and keep them to hand and give one pre made bottle of sachet to him after every other feed or do I have to make them up as I need them?

Any advice or suggestions? TIA

Er, correct me if I am wrong, but you can't OD on Gaviscon, can you? It's not a medication but a thickener, acting with the stomach acids to work on whatever is in the stomach at the time......I think it's the same with Infant Gaviscon. Check with the pharmacist, and see if it would therefore be ok to give it to your ds whenever he needs it, and ask about the making of it in advance, too.

Gaviscon doesn't enter the bloodstream and is just passed out with the stools.

But I am not a pharmacist or a doctor so do check!

My ds is 17 weeks and on it as well (shall we start a club ). It is a pain isn't it - all these bottles/sterlising when I wanted to bf to avoid it lol.

However, what I do is add the powder to freshly boiled water (no need to make that paste) and leave the lid off the bottle. By the time ds has finished his feed, the gaviscon has cooled right down and I can give it to him.

Another thing I don't do is wind unless he really really is in pain. If I do have to wind him I make sure he is completely upright (ie his stomach isn't bent) with his legs straight. He doesn't throw up half as much.

Also, does he throw up at night after you've fed him? I normally bf ds, put him back in his moses basket and he isn't sick at all. I don't give him gaviscon at night as there's no need (and I can't be bothered with going downstairs in the cold). Plus the night milk is a lot thicker than the day milk.

I wind him upright first then I may sit him on me and wind a bit more. He does throw up at night too

That's a shame about the night feeds. I would try and see if you can feed him without winding. If he gets restless on one side then offer him the other side without winding. It seems to work well with ds now and I hardly ever have to burp him, although it does tend to come out the other end

mrsrecycle, my dd is exactly the same and i found that stopping winding made her less sick ( she farts a lot in her sleep now though !). she is rarely sick at night either.

i have to say that giving the gaviscon is a bit of a farce but does work!
