Breastfeeding mums: what does your baby/toddler say or do to make clear he/she wants a feed?

My 18 month old DS goes huh-huh-huh-huh- with his mouth wide open. Very funny, and it really means he wants a feed. Better than asking for bitty?

mine says didi didi (one of the first words she said...). and pulls down my top .

hugeheadofangelhair · 17/12/2006 21:33

How long did you bf for, Psychobabble?

My DS1 and DS2 used to pull up my top as well. DS3 hasn't, yet...

I used some signing with ds - so we used a modified BSL sign. Just occasionally (ds now 4) he still comes up with the sign, and then laughs happily!

whenevilgotstuckupthechimney · 17/12/2006 21:36

dd is 7 months and "boobyjuice" (yes, i know, cringeworthy) is the only word she very clearly understands. and that includes her name!!

hugeheadofangelhair · 17/12/2006 21:36

That's acually quite clever, Donk, no embarrassing "I want booby" or such like

ds (19mo) usually pulls at my top, making his 'I want' noise (a highish-pitched sort of 'mh' noise), and says 'ap' (his word for yes) when I ask him if he wants some milk. Over the last few days he's started pulling at my top and saying 'mi-k'

Donk · 17/12/2006 21:39

I know not everyone likes signing - but it made a huge difference to ds and both our frustration levels........
And as you say there were/are advantages I hadn't even thought about!

hugeheadofangelhair · 17/12/2006 21:40

Where do the babes get the words from, i wonder. We've got huh-huh-huh-huh, didi didi, boobyjuice (nooooo) and bop so far. So very different

it has to be said that it was not me that started saying boobyjuice it was dss and dsd and they are 7 and 4. for a while dsd referred to it as "opening the milk bar" which i thought was ingenious!

PineConesAndHonneybunny · 17/12/2006 21:49

ds2 (just 1) signs milk as well, and at the same time goes:'mummmmmm, mummmmmm' (but he makes that sound for certain foods as well). ds1 used to ask for 'dluh-dluh'.

olittletownofberolina · 17/12/2006 21:51

angelhair, oh I think they pick up anything and everything. ds has echoed a certain swear word we have very occasionally used a couple of times... I don't get where 'ap' for yes comes from, but ds is being brought up bilingual so it might be his sort of convergence of our two languages

beansprout · 17/12/2006 21:51

"Mowk pese mummy"

Cappuccino · 17/12/2006 21:53

I started saying 'feed' at around 16 months when she fed so she got the idea

didn't want her to start saying 'breast' or anything

hate 'booby'

hugeheadofangelhair · 17/12/2006 21:53

Boobyjuice sounds quite sweet and humourous, I just hope that it will be a long while before your dd will say it, whenevilgotstuckupthechimney!

Dd used to say "sides" from about 15/16 months. This came from when she was feeding I would say it was time to "swap sides"

bobsmum · 17/12/2006 22:17

My 18 months old dd signs for milk (like milking a cow's udder - v attractive). Except she's kind of adapted it and now clicks her fingers as if summoning a waiter!

As of last month she asks for "miwch yes peeze mummy"

bobsmum · 17/12/2006 22:18

beansprout - v familiar!

MerryChipmonkAndAHappyNewey · 17/12/2006 23:08

Ds3 says "mine" and opens my top.

CouldEquallyHaveBeenAnAardvark · 18/12/2006 00:46

DS2 (11mo...er...today since it's post-midnight) makes the sign for milk and looks hopeful.

mamama · 18/12/2006 01:11

My 15 month old used to toddle over camly and sign milk. I thought it was very polite. He even occasionally signed 'pleae'

Now he marches up to me, yanks my top or shoves his head down it and says 'huhuhuhuh'. It sounds like that machine gun noise that little boys make.

Thankfully he hasn't (yet) done it in public

kiskidee · 18/12/2006 04:36

dd 20 mos says 'nnaahh' with her tongue over her lower teeth like they have to do when actually feeding. now she also lifts my top or try to open my buttons.

hugeheadofangelhair · 18/12/2006 12:37

lol at "mine"
My husband does that as well sometimes...
