Joe is 2 weeks old and a huge baby - I struggled to BF as my milk never came in properly, so I've moved to excusive bottle feeding. We made the transition on Wednesday, and Joe hasn't poohed since then. Is he constipated due to the transition, or could he be allergic to the formular I'm using? He seems to have tummy ache constantly, and screams insessently, which is very distressing. I'm giving him Infacol to help his wind, but doesn't seem to be easing the tummy ache. Should I keep giving him the formular, or switch to a differet brand?

Please help...

Trixie, is it possible for you to put your baby to the breast? Breastmilk helps the bowel action. This does not have to mean you return to full bf if you don't want to bf any more.

I also think that you need medical or midwifery advice - incessant screaming and apparent pain are not normal, and the lack of poo is not normal, either.

It could all be down to the change to formula but it would be sensible to check this, as he is such a new baby still.

Agree that it's a good idea to check it out with your health visitor or GP. Some babies don't poo as often as others and formula milk is more likely to cause constipation than breastfeeding. I am bottlefeeding and found that some baby milks caused my DS constipation and others didn't. We settled on HIPP organic (having found that other organic ones caused horrible constipation). It might be a case of trial and error. Double check that you are using the right amounts of boiled water and scoops of feed (silly I know but you never know), and check that you are sterilizing bottles and teats appropriately. I used Avent bottles and number 2 teats (I had secondhand bottles, but bought new teats). And good luck. There is nothing so upsetting as a baby that won't feed. When it happened to me I ended up sitting on the sofa just crying.

my bf daughter did not go for 6 days when she was 8 weeks old. Called HV who said give her diluted prune juice, she threw up as soon as I gave her it. went to see HV who said has she had rabbit pellet poos I said no, her reply was well shes not constipated then, apparently at certain stages movement can slow down. I gave her a warm bath that evening, slightly warmer than normal and out it all came. Also camomile helps, if bf mother drinks the tea and if bottle fed a few cool drops of tea in mouth. I know that when I drank it it made her poo more but beware of the colour change!!!!

Also if u massage babys tummy in a clockwise direction this also helps, as well as moving legs as if they were riding a bike. My dd got very distressed too its not nice

gripe water is fantastic for wind - i think you are meant to wait until they are 4 weeks old, but if he is big i am sure he'd be ok. might be worth mentioning to HV.
My dd (and many others i know) got constipated on SMA, aptamil seems to be the best one / gentlest on tummy.
Hope you're ok - a screaming baby is hard i know.
