I wouldnt do it I would sooner formula feed than drink and BF

KathyMCMLXXII · 15/12/2006 12:40

We need the MN bf experts to answer this, but I think they have said in the past that it's ok.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/12/2006 12:42

From what tiktok etc have said in the past, it is fine to drink a bit, and breastfeed - this is still much better than formula feeding.

The rule is, if you're drunk, there will still be quite a bit of alcohol in your milk, so best not to feed then. Pumping and dumping is pointless, though, just wait until you're more sober, and then bf is ok.

depends if you're a purist or not.

there is research that shows babies drink less if there is alchohol in the bm.

i didn't touch a drop the first 2 months then has some fizz at xmas and very rarely then until dd was about 6 months.

since then my consumption has gone up to a couple of glasses per night. but then dd is 13 months and only feeds morning, evening and overnight if she wakes.

alchohol leaves bm at the same rate as it leaves the bloodstream i believe.

if you're intending to get trashed i'd say express enough for any overnight feeds then feed as normal but give yourself about 8 hours to sober up!

also, hand baby to someone else to feed overnight in case you drop them LOL.

Have a drink immediately after breastfeeding if you can - that way it has more time to leave your system before you have to breastfeed again.

Alcohol passes freely into the mothers milk and peaks at around 30-60 minutes after consumption (60-90 minutes if drunk with food). It takes a 120 pound woman 2-3 hours to eliminate the acohol form her body in one serving of beer or wine. If you drink more, it takes longer. So, it takes 13 hours for a 120 pound woman to eliminate the alcohol from a high-alcohol drink.

The sdie effects can include a sleepier baby, and may also inhibit the milk ejection reflex.

However, all that said, moderate and occasional alcohol drinking when a breastfeeding relationship has been fully and firmy established, is not a problem. And the benefits of continuing to breast feed even after having some alcohol certainly outweigh giving formula.

I have read, csan't remember where, but it was very recent, thast a MINIMAL amount of alcohol passes into the milk. Thedanger of drinking comes not from the almost non existant alcohol in the milk but from being 'drunk in charge' iyswim

I tried to have a drink right after a bf and then fed the next feed with ebm and pumped and dumped (made me cry at the waste). I tried not to get drunk but limited myself to one large glass of wine or beer.

...but it is true, they do sleep better when a wee bit of bm is left in the milk. (I once forgot that I had a glass of wine with my lunch and fed her afterwards and she slept all afternoon, lol.)
