8 month old bottle fed baby, refusing formula! Any sneaky tricks?

he is 20lb in weight, so not dainty at all! he has never been keen on formula, but has been formula fed all his life. Now he is refusing to drink the formula. He took 5 oz at mienight, 3 oz at 9 am, 3 oz at 4:30 pm, and that's it. He may take another 3 or 4 oz before bed.

Obviously am cramming him with yoghurt, but I feel at this stage he still needs the vitamins in formula.

any tips to get him to take more, or anything else that mgiuht mean he doesn't need as much?

tried different formula?

different teat/cup/spout etc?

colditz · 13/12/2006 18:04

if I give him a cup, he looks at me with that "Jesus, woman, what are you doing?" look that babies get. Same with different teats.

the only thing that sometimes works is giving it from a mug, of all things! But I don't want to be doing that at 2 am.

i have tried him on SMA and aptamil - he drank even less of that.

Does he have it warm? If so try giving it room temp see if that helps.

Make him a banana smoothy with formula. He might like that.

DizzyBinterWonderland · 13/12/2006 18:28

how's he doing with solids? is he eating too much so has no space or interest in milk?

colditz · 13/12/2006 19:48

Have tried warm, cold, tepid, no food all day until tea time, food every hour, offering only when seems to want it, offering every 2 hours - nothing.

He really doesn't seem to like it.

Might try the banana smoothie idea, he loves bananas.

No tips, but my lo is the same - has been pretty anti-milk since weaned from daytime b/f (at around 6 months) but will now go quite happily from 7am to 7pm milk feed with only a couple of oz in between. Like you, I'm just doing the yog/rice pud/cheese sauce thing, and kind of hoping that once her teeth settle down (sh'e cut 3 in the last 2 weeks), we might up it again.... Is your lo teething?

I have to bribe my DD with infacol to drink the formula Its as it she doesn't like the taste of it on its own. I put the tinest drop of infacol on her lips and after she has tasted it she will drink a good ounce or two of milk, this is then repeated until she rejects the infacol. I hate doing it as she brings up wind fine now so doesn't really need it other than to disguise the initial taste of formula.

I would try the banana smoothie idea if I was you. my dd is alas too young for bananas but when the time comes I will try it myself!

Ready brek.
I made it every day sloppier and full of formula. It got to the point where I think he thought 'oh sod it what else can I do?'

My DS is now nearly eight months and has never liked formula. Always been a struggle to get more than 20 oz into him in a day.

At six months he was eating everything though and I phoned my HV and she said don't worry about how much he drinks if he eats a balanced diet. (Mind you HV's not always reliable!)

I stopped worrying and he has now started drinking four 6 oz bottles a day which is more than ever before. Typical.

colditz · 14/12/2006 19:12

Today, he has drunk a grand total of 6 oz of formula.

Tomorrow, I am making mild banana smoothies.

My ds seems to get bored after a couple of ounces so wait for it... We sing Old Macdonald until the milk is finished. Anyone know any farms with giraffes? (exhausted all farmyard critters at only 5oz down!!)
