hope this isn't too ignorant a question - can you chop and change between differnet formulas? we are using C&G but have been given some SMA sachets that look quite useful. is it likely to cause more trouble than its worth if i mix them up?

You shouldn't have a problem using one or the other at different feeds but I wouldn't mix the powders from 2 different brands up.

Never "risked" it but if it works then one less thing to worry about I guess. We're using SMAg for dd2 and will have to take several tons of it with us on 2 week holiday next month because it's not available where we're going.

like soup dragon said as long as there ot in the same feed its fine because according to midwifes all formulas got the basic same make up

We mixed several brands (depending on which were on special offer )with both dses, and like SoupDragon said its fine as long as you don't mix the powders together as the volumes are usually different.

I wouldnt chop& chg as my baby suffered terrible from birth with the whole digestion/colic thing.Grunting & groaning in agony most of the 1st ten wks of life.
I chgd to OMNEO C&G.Diff baby now.
I would say that if urs was able to digest well & had regular enough bowel movements then go for it as like already said they do have virtually the same ingredients.
