Is my baby gaining too much weight?

Ilovemyboy · 05/12/2006 19:52

My DS was born last Wednesday weighing in at 8lb 15oz. On Friday he had gone down to 8lb 10oz.

He has been weighed again today and now weighs 9lb 9oz.

I am aware that bottlefed babies can put quite a lot of weight on straight away but not breastfed babies? Is my baby growing too quickly? He has put nearly a pound on and he is only a week old tomorrow.

I have to say he has a huge appetite. I feed him every 2-3 hours or he sometimes goes for longer than that if he manages a 3-4 hour sleep. I don't feel like I am overfeeding him as I know his signals for when he is hungry and he is sleeping, pooing and weeing okay.

The midwife says that my milk is 'gold-top'.

If he's breastfed then no. He's fine.

Ilovemyboy · 05/12/2006 19:53

Btw, I am breastfeeding if that wasn't clear in my post.

DizzyBinterWonderland · 05/12/2006 19:55

all sounds fine. you can't overfeed a breast fed baby.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 05/12/2006 19:55

BabyDragon put on 2lbs in her first 3 weeks, as did DS2.

tortoiseBells · 05/12/2006 19:58
  • sounds fantastic. My babies have all been slow gainers - skimmed milk rather than gold top - ds2 had only put on 3 pounds in the first 4 months...well done you!!!

Hi luludoula

I have been meaning to post my birth announcement but haven't had 10 mins to sit and type it all out.

George is doing so well. We had a nightmare 24 hours after he was born where he was starving hungry and wouldn't settle because my milk hadnt come in. I didn't sleep...just fed him then winded him then fed him then winded him. We were so tired and he was really upset.

He is a little star though. He sleeps really well now and is so contented.

I love him more than I ever thought I could.

The time has gone so quickly. The days all mould into one...

Hope you are well. xxx

Has NJ given birth yet? Will check the thread...

you are doing great!
i have a big eater like that. we went through many sizes of nappies in the first few months!!

tribpot · 05/12/2006 20:10

All sounds good to me. I know a few people who have bucked the 'bf baby initially loses quite a lot of weight' trend - good for you! The first 24 hours must have been awful, but it's obviously paid off.

Ilovemyboy · 05/12/2006 20:23

Thanks for replying girls. Just needed to know that we were doing things right.

Jalexandra · 05/12/2006 21:22

You are making me feel very broody!
My ds put on 1lb a week in the first few weeks and he was breastfed. I was so proud at every weighing.
It must be different for every child as when I had my dd she lost weight and was a very slow gainer. I worried myself sick as I was expecting her to be like her big brother.
Sounds like everything is going perfectly with you and your ds. Enjoy it.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/12/2006 21:24

A BFC friend told me that breastfed babies can gain faster in the first few weeks than bottlefed. They do tend to slow down after a few weeks.

But anyway, as others have said, you can't overfeed a breastfed baby.

PortAndLemonaid · 05/12/2006 21:30

Breastfed babies actually put on weight faster than bottlefed babies in the early weeks (statistically speaking, obviously doesn't hold for every baby). It's later on that their rate of weight gain slows down a bit.

You and your DS are doing really well and there's nothing to worry about. Congratulations!

Wallace · 05/12/2006 21:34

Well done

Ds1 doubled his birthweight in 7 weeks - I felt sooo proud

deaconblue · 06/12/2006 13:42

Sounds like you are doing so well. My ds put on 1.5lb by two weeks old and went up from his 50th centile at birth to the 91st, he's still a big boy and loves his food. He was breast fed too, doesn't it make you feel proud when the chubb starts to arrive and you know it's all down to you?

mamijacacalys · 06/12/2006 13:56

Agree with others - you're doing fine!

My DD (now 5 months) was exactly like this in the early weeks. She was 8lb 12oz born, lost a bit, and then just kept gaining about a 1lb a week for a while. She is nice and steady on the 91st centile growth curve and is now over 18lbs.

She is bf too BTW so I have also had lots of 'gold top' comments!

MiaMamma · 06/12/2006 14:07

My DD has been on 91st centile since one week old (now 7months). HV always has suspicious look on her face when I told her DD is breasfed

ItsNotOnlyTheGoodBits · 07/12/2006 10:35

My ds is also breastfed and growing quickly - four months and nearly tripled his birth weight!

After two weeks my MIL said that surely it can't be right for a baby to grow so quickly. THis worried me a little so I asked the HV. She said "Never let anyone say that your bf baby is growing too fast". It helped that dh was with me as well to hear it. Completely put my mind to rest and shut up the MIL!

So as everyone else has said you're doing just fine. Well done

Kidstrak · 07/12/2006 17:12

I formula fed my ds and he put on a few onces a week, i breast fed dd and she put on a pound a week, hv was very pleased but i was shocked at how much my dd put on compared to my ds, but i was assured it was perfectly normal for my dd, babies are so different and feed different, i say well done you!

snowdivaflakes · 07/12/2006 20:43

Hi,
I used to worry (terrified) when dd was little. She put 3oz first week, and ever since she never stopped. Sometimes she put 1lbs a week. I used to take her weighing every week, and always dreaded to know how she put on. She was all over the charts since 1m old and stayed on till 10m and then she slowed down. She still big in her age, but she is no difference to other child now 20m. As long as they not overly fat(big is different in dimensions)I should nt worry
Ilove chubby babies Enjoy your bundle of joy

polecat · 07/12/2006 21:31

Lucky you and what a lucky little boy to have so much gold top milk! He is obviously a little gourmet. I definitely produced the skim variety....

chubley · 07/12/2006 23:15

Congratulations on the birth of your DS! He's doing great. My DS2 was born 4 weeks ago at 9lb 10. After 1 week he went down to 9lb 1 then a week later was 9lb 11, a week later 10lb 4. All he wanted to do at first was sleep - it took a while before he could be bothered to wake up to feed as often as they're supposed to..... now he's feeding like a gannet!

Good-sized babies I think feed more strongly and take the milk more quickly. DS1 was 6lb 7 and only gained weight v slowly and I ended up topping him up with formula.

The more the baby demands, the bigger the supply of milk is! Well done, and enjoy this stage of his life while it lasts - they soon grow up!

hayles78 · 09/12/2006 22:33

My dd was 8 lb 10 at birth and at her 10 week weigh in (8 week check running late) she weighed 13 lb 10.5. She is breastfed also and people comment on how she is a chunk which sometimes upsets me a little as its like they are calling her fat. We think shes beautiful an looks lovely and healthy
