Silly question regarding winding baby

DS is almost 6mo and we have introduced formula for one feed per day at same time every evening, his last feed before bedtime. He has been falling asleep after the feed (as he does while nursing usually) but then sometimes wakes up a little while later with wind, then goes back to sleep. As he has been ebf we haven't had to wind him that much during feeds and are a bit unsure- do we need to wind him after his feed (and wake him up) and how long should we wind him for if he isn't crying at that point? When he wakes up with the wind we just wind him until he stops crying but then we have to settle him all over again. Sorry if this sounds dim.

I wind my son after every feed. If you put him on your shoulder he might fall asleep while you do it.

I also would put them upright on my shoulder and give them a good rub and the opportunity to burp.
Mine were never great burpers though .

I was never very good at winding the baby but I found if I put her upright on my shoulder and gently bounced it would usually come up.

Why do you think he is waking with wind?

ppandj · 14/10/2015 20:10

Thanks for all your replies.

Tiktok I wasn't 100% sure it was wind until one occasion when I posted this and he woke up with a cry, did about 30 farts so we winded him and he did a big burp, then he settled back down almost immediately after getting them out. I just didn't know whether to wake him up to wind him if he had fallen asleep with a bottle.

I have never winded a baby on purpose

As he's falling asleep, pop him up on your shoulder and give his back a rub and let him stretch out. That a little jiggle and he should get the wind up.
Have you tried a couple of drops of infacol in the bottle?

ppandj · 14/10/2015 20:34

Yes that's what we do to wind him and he does get a burp up, but it totally wakes him up. Still, I'd rather have to settle him back down again than him be uncomfortable!

Thanks for the suggestion of infacol- will see if it makes a difference. I think he just takes in a lot of air from the bottle as opposed to bf.

To be honest I stopped winding DS at about 6-8 months but he had been formula fed from 5 days. If you thibk he needs it then do it, whatever works for your baby.

Polka thanks for your reply- did you find that the wind got a bit better on weaning?

He seemed more wriggly/farty at night when we first started the weaning but he is a year now and fine. He was never a great sleeper and so weaning (read that as the wind!) didnt make any difference to his night waking I still give him milk (in a bottle, shock horror) twice a day and he will usually stop halfway through, burp and then carry on. He is generally very farty but I suspect thats more diet and I dont have any other children to compare with!
