breastfeeding after tongue tie snip

So on day 20 and dd has had loads of feeding problems. Ive had excruciating nipples, weight loss and slow weight gain, was told to supplement with formula as dd dropped from 25th to 9th centile which I did. She would feed constantly and never settle. Have been breastfeeding, pumping and topping up day and night and exhausted. Just found out today she had a severe tongue tie. What can I expect now? Will she immediately feed better? Even with top ups she was spluttering on the bottle. Just did my first feed since and she fed for 30 min and seems content. Is this too good to be true? This is dd2...couldn't get on with bf dd1 and gave up so been determined this time. Have been so exhausted and feel like crying with relief that things might start getting better!

It should be easier to latch immediately after but they have to relearn how to feed so there is probably a 2 week adjustment period. Also be prepared for an unsettled baby for 24-35 hours. May want to feed very frequently and pop off and on and Cry a little more. That's all worse case really.

I saw a definite improvement immediately and within 3 weeks, feeding was perfect from a latch perspective. Feeds should get shorter as well

With DD I saw an immediate improvement. Feeds also got shorter.

Alas, her TT reattached, so I ended up having to have it snipped three times. However, it never reattached as badly as it was in the beginning and we bf until she was 2.

My dd2 had hers cut yesterday and now won't nurse at all.

I have a bf counsellor coming this evening but l fear it's the end of bf for us.

BFing is not the be all and end all. Dc1 had severe tongue tie. Had to be bottle fed with a teat that basically poured into his mouth as could not move entirely anchored tongue. After tongue released he could not understand what to do with a boob and never BF. I was so upset and distraught at the time but discovered subsequently this is very common. In your shoes I would keep an open mind about whether BF will happen successfully. It's far better to have your sanity and a content baby then force the BFing. Good luck. I really feel for you.

DS1 fed well initially, then we had a nightmare time 24-48 hrs post divide, then it was all great.
DS2 was not nearly as bad, and probably would not have asked for referal if we hadn't had DS1. He fed faster immediately, and we didn't have the set back.

Greenback in theory l agree 100% but l had massive issues with bf dd1 and overcame them so l'm feeling guilty that l probably won't overcome the issues with dd2 and wonder deep down if i am actually trying as hard as l did with dd1.

Fuck knows l tried hard and it did nearly send me over the edge . But perversely the sense of achievement when we cracked it at 12 weeks was immense. Bloody weirdo aren't l Grin

My DD had her tongue tie snipped at around 3 weeks and had improvement around 3 weeks later. Her latch has never been great but we're still BF 5 months on. Things should improve for you once the tongue tie is snipped, hope it goes well for you.
