Dd is currently 15mths and has 2 formula sma3 bottles/cups a day. 5oz in morning/8oz before bed.

Just wondering when other mum's stopped formula milk? dd still loves bedtime feed, but is not as fussed with morning one anymore. But from reading info about milk, they say you should give them milk up to 2 yrs??
I am already giving dd below stated amount that sma say!

Friend with slightly older kids say they stopped around 12mths!

I know there is probably no right or wrong way of doing it .... but any advice?
She has been having full fat milk as well with cereal, etc so she is still getting calcium.

HELP

DS went to cow's milk at about 15 months he loved formula so took him a while to make the change, he has half a pint in the morning and half a pint at bedtime. Not sure when this stops but don't envisage stopping until he is over the age of two?

It is less about having milk as a "feed" and more about keeping it as a drink ime. 13oz fliuid a day isn't very much - is she drinkig anything else eg water, juice etc?

The ds's (5 and 3) both drink as much if not more milk as your little one, but I don't think of it as a feed as such. I give them a drink with their meals and the choice is typically milk or water.

ds is 15 months. He switched to cows milk (from formula) at around 12 months.
He has 3/4 bottle of cows milk with his breakfast and a full bottle before bedtime.
He also has milk, cheese, yoghurt etc

I would suggest not going by what SMA say as they would just like you to buy their formula for as long as possible!

blueamema · 30/11/2006 11:54

She does have other drinks... Diluted OJ/water at meal times.
May start offering her full fat milk with her meals as another option then.

Is there a reason they say to give formula up to 2 yrs rather than full fat milk??

Because they want you to keep buying the tins...

blueamema · 30/11/2006 11:57

Yep, she also has other calcium stuff... cheese/yogurt etc.
But is there something extra in formula that she should still be having....If you look on the side of the tin its full of nutrient listings?

Is she fully weaned? Eating a varied, healthy diet? If so, then the nutrients from the tin are provided by the food anyway.

Jesa jam I read that as 3-4 bottles of cows milk with breakfast ! Some follow-on milks contain iron so good if lo not keen on red meat , green leafies, lentils (ok shoot me now I give my kids lentils). Not sure about SMA v. expensive way to get iron tho. Other sources are b'fast cereals not baby one though, chocolate and raisins. We gave up offering milk in the morning at around 15 months , but he has 1/2 pint on 3 weetabix and 1/2 pint at night he is 2.7 now.

naughtymummy... 3 weetabix!! WOW
... and do you mean plain chocolate?

pitchounette...Thanks for advice, think I will definately replace SMA with full fat now.

Don't know about bottles and speech delay?? dd knows about 40 words and animal sounds and pronounces them perfectly!!! (not really sure whether that's normal at her age? 15mths)

Ds1 stopped having formula at 12 months. Then had cows' milk (full fat). He's 2 1/2 now and has milk first thing (about 4/5 oz) and before bed (about 7/8 oz). If your DD is eating a full, varied diet, she shouldn't need anything that's added to the formula, as she should be getting it through her food. If you give her things with vitamin C with her protein, it will help her to absorb the iron better apparently (e.g. an orange for pudding after beef for main).

clairemow · 30/11/2006 13:09

surely the speech thing with bottles is only if you allow LO to wander about with a bottle stuck in her mouth, or sit in the buggy with a bottle permanently attached? DS had a bottle teat until 18 months (then had those green avent sippy things), he'd drink a bottle in about 3 mins, so can't see how that could possible affect speech or teeth or anything else!

naughtymummy · 30/11/2006 17:50

plain choc yes but also milk with decent amount of cocoa ditto cocoa itself and drinking choc.

Think bottle advice is for dental carries particularly if sweet drinks are given that way. Also can lead to too much milk being taken instead of proper solid food.

blueamema · 30/11/2006 20:51

Thanks guys... feel better now. Know she is getting enough of the good stuff from her food/ full fat milk etc... so am going to get her off SMA.

Feels like such a big step though!! no more bottle! will have to hunt out her cups.

clairemow... agree about vit C/ orange juice absorbing iron. Had to take iron tablets after dd was born as blood count was low... for some reason oranges/vit c makes you absorb more.
