Mixing breastmilk and formula?

My ds is 11 weeks old and breastfed. He takes occasional bottles of formula (1 a week or so) usually 6-8oz at a time and has no issues switching between breast and bottle. I've never really fancied expressing milk (he's a very frequent feeder and tbh I haven't the time) but recently bought a pump and decided to give it a go. I've not quite got the hang of it and have only managed to get 4oz on one occasion. Usually only 2oz from both breasts. I was wondering if I could top this up to 8oz using 6oz of formula? Or is this not a good idea? Should I give the 2oz breastmilk then formula in a seperate bottle? Or could I stick it all in together for less faff. It's usually MIL who gives bottle. I reckon if I keep up the expressing I'll eventually get more than 2oz but in the meantime id rather it didn't go to waste. Any advice?

I mixed BM and formula all the time, as I couldn't express enough for a whole feed. - just either use ready mix formula or make sure the formula has cooled from boiling if you make it up from powder. Boiling hot formula can destroy many of the goodies in breastmilk.

It's fine to mix f and ebm. I was actually advised to do it to "trick" dd into taking some f.

TeamBacon · 22/09/2015 13:44

Yep, it's fine. Nurses in PHDU told me so :)

There's no harm in mixing it at all but if there is some left over you will have to throw it thus wasting the breastmilk. I do it the faffy way and give breastmilk first in one bottle then formula in another.

I express once a day first thing in the morning. My DD only feeds on one side usually each feed, in the morning my boobs are at their most full and I can get up to 7oz off the one boob, so it might be worth seeing what time of day you seem to get the most :).

I mix feed ds. Rather than mixing the breast milk and formula together, I alternate his bottles. So he gets every other or so bottle ebm as I can't express enough and I wouldn't want to waste it. Works for us, not sure if all babies would take well to the different consistencies though

Why don't you have time to demand feed and eleven week old baby?

moggle · 23/09/2015 22:14

She says she doesn't have time to express Penfold.

Penfold007 · 23/09/2015 22:35

I read that but why? Surely it impacts on any advice people offer?

eurochick · 23/09/2015 22:44

She says it is because he is a frequent feeder. It is all in the OP!

Not even going to answer you penfold007. Baby is the picture of health and feeding is going great.
Thanks all for the advice everybody else. I will top up what I can express with a few oz of formula :)

Weebeastiebaby I asked a really crass question and I unreservedly apologise. Breastfeeding is hard work and you should feed your baby however you want. I'm sorry.
