For the last week or so i have been getting shooting pains in both breasts, they dont happen while im feeding just between feeds. Also when i feed i feel really sick,it comes in waves,is it normal or am i some sort of freak.
my baby is almost 7wks old and i want to keep breast feeding her. with last 2 DDs i only managed it for a week and felt like such a failure when i stopped.

Hi, I had mastitis with dd1, it started with shooting pains, and becomes a fever, so call your hv! Sicky feeling could be blood sugar plummeting as baby nicks all your resources, try eating constantly while feeding...(any excuse )

Don't feel like a failure. 7 weeks is great, your baby will have got all the imunities etc,as these are in the colostrum. There are obviously benefits with bf, but benefits with bottle too. Your baby should sleep a couple of hours longer, so you get some sleep, and your partner, if you have one, can do the late feed and 'bond' (while you sleep!). Sorry, long ramble, hope this helps x

Doh, rereading your message, you want to KEEP bf, not stop!! Sorry! Just eat lots of what you fancy, and sit around with your feet up whenever you can, also get lots of help from hv, they are PAID to help us, whatever they make out!

I don't know about the feeling of sickness but I had really bad shooting pains in between feeds when I had thrush in the milk ducts. They really were sharp and painful and went right back almost to the shoulder and under the armpit.

This is different and harder to diagnose than thrush on the nipple (though sometimes goes hand in hand).

I didn't feel sick with it though, so it may be different, but I would avoid sugary foods as the fungus which causes thrush thrives on those. Yeasty foods too.

Have a look at this page from the Breastfeeding Network which will tell you more about thrush then if you suspect you may have it they have some great advice on getting rid of it.

If they suspect mastitis (which they usually do as many health professionals don't know about the more systemic thrush) they may prescribe anti biotics which would be a very bad idea if it did turn out to be thrush, so be wary.

Good luck. If it gets really bad you could take pain killers just to see you through.

The BF network has lots of good BF advice and can also put you in touch with a counseller if necessary.

There's also La Leche League and Kellymom for more support and advice.

Good luck.
