Rusks at 10 weeks

Moominy12 · 01/09/2015 21:29

My 10 week old daughter is still only taking 2oz every 2 hours on comfort milk. When she was on gaviscon it made it a lot thicker so she had a little more and lasted longer.

As a baby I started rusks at 10 weeks and I know a few people that started at 9 weeks and it did no harm.

Can someone give me some advice on how to give it and how often wtc?

For anyone who has a silly opinion to keep it to themselves, no one goes by the book these days! Only mums that have actually done it to reply please

2 hourly feeds at 10 weeks is pretty normal! My DD1 didn't go longer than 2 hours for at least 4 months. Rusks are just sugary biscuits, there's no reason they will make your baby go longer between feeds.

I did Blush

I was weaned at 3 months and I suffer from ibs. This may be unrelated, but I wouldn't risky early weaning with my dc.

I beg to differ about going by the book. I don't know anyone in RL who weaned early with rusks which are incidentally full of sugar.
OP my son had silent reflux, he always seemed hungry because he confused the discomfort he was in with hunger
Can I suggest you speak to your gp about getting a stronger antacid such as ranitidine or omeprozole, and a thickener such as carobel? combined, they saved my sanity and helped my boy thrive.
I think adding a sugary solid so early might set your baby up for bigger problems. And the old addage if never did me any harm may he in your case, but the amount of people now days living with bowel and gastrointestinal issues may be a result of early weaning, it may not have happened to you but it happened to alot, not worth the risk IMO

Sorry to tell you this OP but my baby wanted milk 2 hourly until she was over 8 months old. She is little and just couldn't /wouldn't take more milk so she could go longer. The pattern carried on several weeks into weaning (we started at 6 months following the latest advice). Babies often want feeding regularly. Feeding sugary biscuits that could be harmful to an undeveloped gut is not the way to go.

ILoveMyMonkey · 01/09/2015 22:24

She just so little but seems hungry

Is she draining her 2oz bottle?

I'd start by upping her milk at each feed - I was always told if they drain the bottle add an extra ounce. So try 3oz and see if things improve.

Not going to comment on the rusks, everyone has already said what I think about that.

The other thing worth considering is whether the comfort feed is passing through the tear at a reasonable pace without tiring her out at the end of a bottle. They do seem to need bigger teats.

anothernumberone · 01/09/2015 22:35

Tear=teat

A 10 week old shouldn't be on solids! It's far too young.

How did it go with the HV OP?

dementedpixie · 03/09/2015 10:03

If the milk is thick then you need to use a faster flowing single hole teat. I wouldn't give risks at all as they are super sugary and also most contain gluten which should be avoided until 6 months whether weaning early or not.

I weaned one at 16 weeks (the guide at the time) and the other at 23 weeks and the later weaning was much much easier and less stressful.

Rusks not risks
