He's still having lots of wet nappies. But where's the poo gone? He gets bad tummy pains and this seems to be making things worse.

Is he breastfed or bottlefed? If bottle, have you changed formula lately?

DS2 (12 weeks and bf) often goes 24 hours or more without a poo, and then when one comes, it's huge and causes him a bit of pain on passing. I think their digestive systems take a while to settle down.

blob2be · 26/11/2006 15:01

Yes he's breastfed. Just a bit alarming that he was so pooey before and has suddenly stopped!

bet when he does a poo, it'll be massive, all up his back and down his legs, and in the middle of the night... just to make things easy for you!

Five weeks seems a bit early to me for the poo slow down. But if he's otherwise fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.

My DS2 went for a while where he pooed only once a week. And it wasn't even that big! He just was really good at digesting milk, I think.

both DSs had a bout of horrible nappy rash at 4 weeks, then did the no poo thing at 7 weeks (for about a month, only pooped every 3-4 days).I'm sure there must be a developmental bowel change around this age.

blob2be · 26/11/2006 16:08

He just filled his nappy with an enormous poo! I'm very excited, who would think that a poo would be such an event!

My understanding is that the gastro-colic reflex patterns change at a few weeks old, and become less sensitive. This explains why many babies will not produce poo several times a day after this maturing stage is reached. In some babies it seems to happen very suddenly - I don't know why!

hurrah blob2be! It's incredible what you get excited about when you have a small baby...! And the conversations you have about colour/texture/consistency.... hehehe

My DD did exactly that, shewould poo with every feed then nothing for 5days. HV said not to worry, as long as poo still yellow and runny and she notin any pain then it was normal. She still only goes every few days (and there's afew days worth there!!) and she's 10 weeks and perfectly healthy.
