Amitriptyline and breastfeeding?

Today the doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline, he said it's fine to take when breastfeeding but the leaflet says it's a big NO NO.
What should I do?

From posts on here, I think people recommend ringing La Leche League

Thank you team, I'll give them a ring in the morning :)

I've been on this through pregnancy and currently breastfeeding 15 week old, prescribed by a psychiatrist. It's fine, the leaflet is in case you've got hold of it without a doctor's advice! hth Smile

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/newtoxnet/lactmed.htm is a good site to get some info, which you can then discuss with your doc. Breastfeeding Network drugsline is on Facebook, for more personal info.

Have you taken amitriptyline before? Do you know what dose you are prescribed?
I have no experience of breastfeeding while taking it but I took it for 3months or so for nerve problems and it knocked me out good and proper every night on 10 and even 5mg. I wouldn't dream of taking it now I have a baby as I know I wouldn't hear her in the night. I think it affects people differently so if you have experience of it and you don't react this way it might be fine. I would be wary though. Good luck!

I've never taken it before but I am on 25mg for headaches/migraines.
The doctor suggested taking it at night/after tea as it makes you drowsy but to be honest I haven't been sleepy/drowsy after taking it although I've only been taking it a few days now

You should be okay then, just be wary. It properly knocks me out!

The lower the dose the greater the sedative effect. So 5-10mg for use as a sleeping tablet. I'm on 75mg which certainly doesn't knock me out! It's used for all sorts of things, just as different strengths. Smile

e-lactancia.org/producto/85 gives good data, and toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search2/f?./temp/~7ZehE7:1 for all the refs!

I know people who are on 400mg twice a day for IBS and it has no sedative effect on them.
