Hi,
My little baby started getting what I assume is reflux today. She had a bit of vomit coming out the corner of her mouth a few times today but this last time there is some stringy brown mucus in it and I'm now very scared of what it could be.
Anyone has any advice please?

Oh, forgot to answer to a previous poster. We are getting treated with nyastatin for the baby and I've been told I need to rub canesten cream on my nipples but I'm not sure that's practical as shes basically on my breast for comfort every hour or so.
And I need to wash the canesten before she latches on but that means I have to put the baby down when she's asking for the breast, go wash and dry and return to screaming baby. Wish there was a pill to take, would make it much easier.

Pleased to hear you are feeling better. Don't care what anyone says about it not hurting - I have nursed three and it felt like fire to me for a couple of weeks each time. But it gets better and after a while it was lovely. So lovely that it was hard to stop. You will get there!

Re the weight loss and constantly feeding, DS gained this week 140g which is more than half his loss.

I have been switch feeding, 5 minutes on one side the switch to the other, repeat until full. Also doing breast compressions (look on YouTube) and it has REALLY helped! Also if they fall asleep mid feed, wiggle an arm, tickle etc to get them going again, if that fails change nappy undress etc.

And re husband, I was the same but he now has him when he gets home from work, usually while he's asleep but cuddled him up while i cook dinner. Its easier too now DS is awake and more interactive (already!!)

Notta - that's great that he's starting to gain, you are definitely doing the right thing. I have today started to write down every time I feed and for how long because I don't think she's been feeding too well for the last couple of days.
So she fed today for about 50min between 11 and 12 but I had to (like you say) wiggle her arms and tickle her. She dozed off a few times so had to be vigilant. Since then she did cry once so I've put her on the breast and only fed for5 min only and then started using it as a dummy.
Does this sound ok so far? I think she should be hungry after 3 hours?!

Hi wtfih, has she fed yet? I am by no means an expert, i'm new to this too. I just know what worked for me this week.

I had the first 10 days of people seeing him constantly latched on and saying ooh you're doing so well! Then he hadn't gained enough weight, then he lost that gain and some more and it felt like it was all going wrong. I think in hindsight he wasn't feeding efficiently, lots of time on the boob, not much going in. I noticed an increase in nappies the first day i started the switch feeding and compressions, also he started doing little milky burps and the occasional sick up. This was a good sign!

It might be worth tryingbthe compressions to make sure a good amount milk is going in, basically hand express as she suckles.

Hi Notta,

I just fed her for about 40 min alternating breasts every 15 minutes. She falls asleep so quick it's crazy. Anyway, I've tried the compression technique you recommended and I think she took bigger gulps. At least it sounded like it so I hope I've been doing it right.
She definitely doesn't stay on my breast as much as before. Especially in the first few days, she was latched on all the time.
I'm thinking of buying a scale to check progress but I might drive myself mad with it. On the other hand, I hate waiting for another week to see what the mw says Confused

I hope it works as well for you, DS is now managing to get more milk on his own, i can really tell the difference in his feeding. Its hard isn't it waiting for the next weigh? But at least it gives you a decent bit of time to work on the feeding. It was a bf person who suggested this technique too not just my random idea. The switching is meant to stimulate your milk flow. I havecstarted feeling the let down too wg
which i wasn't before. Hope you cone back to update and your DD has had a good gain.

Hi wtfih

I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned and I've overlooked it, but has ddi been checked for tongue tie? That can affect her feeding and your nipples.

And i think you've already bought a breastpump but if it doesn't work for you it should be possible for you to hire one. Our local surestart breastfeeding group has them to hire as do the local location consultants. Save you wasting money on another one that may or not work. But as others have said, it's probably best to leave it until bf has been established. And fwiw I've bf three dc into toddlerhood and probably managed to express 80ml in total that whole time!

On the thrush, you can get pills. I did (after three weeks of agony with thrush in the milk ducts) and it took a long dose (more than the 7 days they initially gave me) but it finally allowed me to be pain free between feeds. Your GP may not want to prescribe it initially (mine didn't) but was happy to call the local breastfeeding specialist clinic and take advice and then prescribe.
