is there anything you can give when u realise they are intollerant? or do you have to wait for it to leave their system?

my lo is almost 4 months. is on sma lf. symptoms of his intollerance were green nappy. colic like symptoms. excema. red around the eyes. sneezing wheezing. nappys and excema are better on LF but still has wind wheezing sneezing

i thort he might have bit of solent reflux but doc said not reflux as isnt sick she gave me colief.. upon research it seems that was pointless as LF formula vontains mo lactose for the colief to break down hense pointless

im getting to the point..

well hes big boy and i thort might be ready to start bit of rice and it might help with the indegestion or whatever hes got but hes reacted to it... sneezing red eyes rash grern nappy bad gut pain

usually take three days to see any change in him was wondering if there anythi i can give him to help or if we just have to wait the three days to see improvement...

any ideas? no judgements please im at my wits end with this

Please go back to the GP and insist on a referral to a Paedatrician, take someone with you as back up if you can. It's a sad fact but the GPs have always taken more notice if we both turn up. Your GP will have some NICE guidelines on when to refer for allergies.

Unfortunately, it the milk upsets him weaning really won't help and it's been proved that offering solids, like baby rice, can make the risk of allergies worse.

It sounds like your loo may have Cows Milk Protein Allergy, CMPA. A prescription milk such as neocate should help. Ask your go for this while you wait for the Paed appointment. There are other milks if he doesn't settle on Neocate.

thanks for the reply

little confused about this lactose intollerance and cows milk allergy

whats the difference? isnt lactose the allergy? so the two things are the same ?

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/08/2015 20:58

I don't have lactose allergy, I have cows milk protein allergy. One is a allergy to the sugar, the other to the protein.

There's some on CMPA here. They also have a helpline, which you might find helpful, here.

Have you been to the GP yet? If not, it might be worth going to a walk in centre tomorrow.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/08/2015 21:04

Oh and have a read of this on Kellymom. It explains the difference better than I ever could Smile.

It's aimed at bfing Mums but I think you may find some of the info useful. It also has a "hidden dairy cheatsheet" which I found useful, and you may too once you start weaning proper Smile

22Dee · 14/08/2015 21:52

but he improved on easy to digest and even moreso on sma LF then his nappys were normal and not green

this is confusing

ill be in spain with him this time next week for 2 weeks im scared hell have an allergic reaction to something over thrre

OP posts:
22Dee · 14/08/2015 21:54

spose he could have both.. a latose intollerance and protein allergy

OP posts:
Whatabout · 14/08/2015 21:57

Advice is no solid foods until six months, he really doesn't need anything and with issues already known it would seem wise to stick to it. Give him the LF and forget anything else for a few months

22Dee · 14/08/2015 22:42

whatabout - this isnt about weaning

if i wanted generic textbook advice about whether to wean or not id have asked that

OP posts:
22Dee · 14/08/2015 22:43

julie thankyou for your help

Whatabout · 14/08/2015 22:57

My son had CMPA and I was told not to introduce anything before six months. I hope your son improves.

22Dee · 15/08/2015 09:21

whatabout

well it takes time to find out that theres an allergy and ov i didnt know that the symptoms he has had were an allergy untill he had them so clearly with the rice. so im glad i gave it him actually because its helped identify his allergic symptoms

now after almost 4 months of these symptoms in varying degrees affecting our quality of life causing him lots of distress i realise that hes been suffering with a milk allergy too and not lactose intollerance

same as when i stopped breastfeeding. his symptoms became strong enough to recognise. obv if id known he was allergic to formula i wouldnt have stopped bf

so this has been all trial and error with symptoms that could be explained another way

the breastfeeding brigade and no weaning brigade comments just arent helpfull

You could look into enzymes and def start using probiotics...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/08/2015 13:20

Gosh you've had a tough time, you must be exhausted. Could you film him when he's at his worst to show a doctor? He's bound to been all smiles if he's in front of the doctor, it's Sod's law Smile

Got another link for you here from the NHS site.

Will be back in a min. There's a formula that is completey milk free, but I can't remember the name of it. The neocate might help as the proteins are broken down more than ordinary formula, so are easier to digest.

And of course you wouldn't have stopped being if you thought this was going to happen Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/08/2015 13:28

Try this one. It's available on prescription. If you are going to buy some yourself, it will probably be worthwhile filming him on his usual milk, then filming him taking this one. That way you will have evidence when you see the Paed.

Acorncat · 15/08/2015 13:40

Silent reflux is when they're not sick so your GP is pretty clueless there. Mine has silent reflux and allergy to cows milk protein, they can have both.

I would see a different GP, demand a referral (your HV can help with this) and trial diary free formula. It's expensive so GPs are reluctant to prescribe which means you might have to wait for the paediatrician referral or buy it yourself. You'll know fairly quickly if it's helping or not. If it doesn't then at least you've ruled it out. I wouldn't start weaning, it won't help if it's CMPA.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/08/2015 14:55

Have you decided on anything yet 22? Smile

22Dee · 16/08/2015 18:29

jiltedjulie yes i have got vid somewhere of what he was like after a formula feed before it was changed to LF. few days later he had his first green nappy

OP posts:
22Dee · 16/08/2015 18:32

duno if i mentioned but after his first green nappy i changed to easy to digest which eased it a bit. i did fone the doc he wanted to guve him soy and didnt know anyother milk exsistedAngry Angry i requested to try LF he gave me 2tins and wanted to reintroduce normal formula in one week Shock Shock

22Dee · 16/08/2015 18:38

there are 3 doctors at my surgery. one who said no such thing as silent reflux gave me colief to use with lactose free milk... if im not mistaken thats pointless ?

its pot luck when u ring docs they do telephone appointments. i asked anothr doc for some infacol coz when the wind reaches his guts hes always bringing his legs up arching his back and you can tell hes in pain. ive bought some before so i know it eases gut pain

that doc said youve had colief they are all the same which they arent at all colief breaks down lactose thats why u sposed to wait 2 hrs after youve added it to the bottle...

third doc weve discussed he wanted to put him on soy

so yeah not even seen an actual doc let alone one that i have faith in

this weekend lo had a temperature after every bottle. was rubbing eyes. sneezing and his spots were worse and he was refusing any more than 4oz he sposed to have 8 so i went with my mom to a&e.

they gave me piriton and referred me back to the doctors which he said he was going to write to them and suggest hes reffered to a pediatrician

i gotta follow this up monday morning

what i still have no clue about... is if he is allergic to cows milk protein then why did his nappies change to yellow on LF. anyone know?

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/08/2015 19:18

Gosh you are having a tough time of it. I think you are right to refuse soy formula, that's really not recommended.

Our doctor's phone lines open at 8am, but if we go to the surgery about ten to, queue up and insist on an appointment, you can always get one. I'd print off the Allergy UK information and take it with you Smile

At least the hospital are suggesting the referral. Did they not get a Paed to see him at the time?

As for the poo, could it be that he's got a lactose and protein allergy and just cutting out one of these made things a little easier for him?

LongLankyLegs · 16/08/2015 19:29

22Dee I've got a tin of Neocate I can post you if you like. Not sure it's lactose free but it's definitely for cows milk protein intolerance.

My dd was diagnosed with this at a few weeks old. Had green mucusy nappies amongst other things. It's been fucking horrendous trying to muddle through and figure things out. We were prescribed nutramigen which baby refused and she refused the aptimil junior pepti and neocate. We kept a tin of neocate at home though just in case.

Anyway I continued bf but have been dairy free for a while now as she reacts really badly through my milk. Have also cut out wheat as well and dd is sleeping much better.

Just pm me your address if you're in the uk and you want it and I'll send it. Well done for persisting, people made me feel like I was mad insisting something was wrong with my dd. I was bloody right!

22Dee · 20/08/2015 21:17

Hi just wanted to update, oh gosh lots happened, saw doc and hv after going a&e, doc referred me to pediatrician

the appointment was given to me at the doctors on the same day but wasnt for 2 months!!!!

i had already been referred to a pediatrician when he was 6 weeks old for an unrelated matter and that appoint was today, checking the letters it was with the same doctor!!!!!!!!!!! so i mentioned the other referral about CMA

two minutes of mentioning symptoms and she was already writing a prescription, hes been put on similac, hypoallergenic milk

today i feel truly blessed! fancy the referral for cma being with the same doc i had already been referred to!

so have to see how he goes, he doesnt like the taste much at the mo but he'll get used to it, also managed to get the prescription filled in time to take to spain tomoro

today i really am blessed

and i must say thankyou to you ladies for the support! x
