Hi All,

My baby is 5 weeks old and we have been struggling to feed well from the start. He has had a tongue tie corrected at 2.5 weeks, but the bad technique persists.

I struggle to get him to open his mouth wide enough and if he does as soon as I have him on his bottom lip slowly slips up towards the nipple. I unlatch and latch constantly, but the same thing happens. My nips aren't as painful as int he first weeks, but are so sensitive I can't bear for anything to touch them.

I have tried pulling his chin down once latched, but this is not very effective. His jaw is so strong and if he does let me he tends to slip back up again.

Due to all the problems he has had slow weight gain and I have had to resort with topping him up from the bottle.

I've tried telling him he will be a formula fed baby if he doesn't sort himself out, but he doesn't seem to care! Please help as can't bear the pain much longer.

thanks
Caroline

Have you tried different positions? Sorry, its the only thing I can think of... DS used to go under my arm to feed, now goes the opposite way. Also, he feeds with my lying down sometimes. Have you tried Lanisoh on your nipples? I just bought some and its great Have you tried expressing before a feed to get a "better" nipple shape? Just trying to think if the things that worked for me...

Do you have the numbers of breastfeeding councillors?

can't really advise as i have experience re:tongue tie but keep this bumped up and maybe tiktok or someone more knowledgeable will be along with some advice

i second the lasinoh recommendatiion to help with sore nipples until you get latch prob sorted though.

Hi girls,

thanks for help. have tried every position possible. also been on lansinoh, but my problem is soreness and feeling bruised rather than cracked nipples now.

have tried la leche and assoc. bf mothers. have had 3 hvs and every midwife in the county. all at loss. la leche have been v good and recommended exercises to get his tongue down, but he hates it! I think the hv and midwifes wonder why I am still trying.

If I could solve the latch slipping thing i think would be bearable. any advice welcomed.

thanks
c

try breast compression, look it up on internet Dr Jack Newman I think his name is. There is loads of useful info on his site with videos etc. The compression should keep the milk flowing and baby feeding well, stopping the "slip".

Thanks for the advice. I have become a major fan of Dr Newman. Have just been looking at his site whilst doing the last feed. Need to have about 5 hands for the compression, but does seem to help.

thanks
Caroline
