Is second stage Milk a horrible thing? Help! I have a hungry baby!!

Hi everybody

My little one is only three weeks old today, however he was born a good 9 pounds 10 1/2. He was a big boy, could not wait for my milk to come, and demanded (screamed the hospital down) food. I tried to breasfeed but nothing was enough, so we had to top up with formula. The result: he preferred bottle, so when milk finally arrived at the third day, he totally refused to have it.

Anyway, to make it short, he kept demanding more and more milk. He is only three weeks old today, but he is having around 26 oz per day of Farleys first Milk, and keep demanding more, sometimes doesn't even last 3 hours...

My question is: what to do?? any advice or experience? I am tempted to switch to Second milk for hungrier babies, but Health visitor said that it could damage his organs because is difficult to digest....She was addamant I should stick to the first stage milk for a YEAR! My problem also is that I have a little toddler to look after too, so need to have a routine or something similar to cope.

Is second milk really such an evil thing?? when to use it? any experiences with hungry babies?? any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

second stage milk is heavier and harder to digest..nece it leaves babies feeling fuller for longer. it is not recommended for babies under 6 weeks. i don't know about organ damage..but i suspect a nasty tummy ache and constipation are quite likely. he is a newborn..programmed to eat and eat and eat and eat! not going 3 hours is not a problem...they have a growth spurt around this time aswell.

i would say stick with as much first milk as she wants for now,, and hang fire on the second milk for a while longer.

congratulations on the arrival of your baby!

DS2 was also a big baby when born, and keeps getting bigger. I just feed him whenever he seems to want feeding, without really looking at the clock. Not sure exactly how much he has as he is bf, but it is a lot! I would just keep feeding on demand for a while, and I'm sure it will settle down.

I find if I am out and about he sleeps more and feeds less, but then makes up for it at home, so I can't win either way!

Definitely stick to first milk - real problems with constipation etc with second milk. Have you tried a dummy?
