10 week old with cold worried about milk supply

Good morning,

my 10 week old has a cold and is not feeding as well as he has done.
I am bf and am now worrying about my supply.
He will latch on and suck a bit but by the end of it my breasts are still very heavy and he is asleep an won't latch back on even when I wake him.
Is there anything I can do to make sure that once he is back to his normal self he will get enough milk?

I have up to now never tried expressing or a bottle (don't even have a pump or bottles) but am wondering whether that would be the way to go until he is better?

Thanks for all your help in advance!

Your milk supply will adjust upwards as soon as he starts to feed normally again - established breastfeeding (and yours certainly is) is not fragile and can easily cope with a lull in demand like this.

The only reason to express would be to keep yourself comfortable.

Thanks for your reply tiktok.

Might have to think about expressing then as it does get rather uncomfy at the moment.

I remember having a very simlair thing with my son (now 7). I used to bathe his nose with a saline solution before feeds as a blocked nose means they mouth breathe and can't get a good latch. I also stopped him and did this to wake him a little when he fell asleep at the breast.

Your milk supply will readjust when his feeding picks up - your body is very clever, the more he feeds the more you will produce, so don't worry about that being an issue. If you are feeling very uncomfortable you can hand express (don't woory about pumps and bottles unless you need to), just squeeze some out into the sink or something.

Take care of yourself and relax - that is the best thing to ensure your supply of milk is good.

Best wishes and congratulations with establishing breastfeeding.

Thanks to you as well dimpledthings.

I am really chuffed about all the good advice that is being given here and have to say it is far more useful and understandable than some of the advice given by hvs, doctors and books.
