13 day old hasnt pooed in 24 h

My 13 day old baby hasn't pooed in 24h. This has happened once before and what got him going was a bottle of formula which he vomited up and made him have diarrhoea! He is ebf currently. Any way I can make him go? Do I need a dr? :( tia

Could you maybe call 111 and ask their advice?

When I was discharged from hospital with a newborn they said I could ring the delivery suite for a few weeks if I had any issues. Have you tried that?

I wouldn't give them formula again if it made him ill last time. It is harder to digest than breast milk. Is feeding going okay?

I'm sure someone more knowledgable will come along but in my experience it's not unusual for ebf babies to poo for 3-4 days sometimes. Mine didn't anyway

Totally normal in an EBF baby - you can relax. There is so much goodness and so little to waste in breastmilk that as they get older sometimes can be up to 3 / 4 days before a poonami explosion.

Then it's like playing roulette or buckaroo just waiting for the moment when baby will need a bath and a completely new set of clothes!

Ebf babies can go days without a poo. DD used to go for 3-4 days at a stretch. Breast milk is such a perfect food for them that they digest almost all of it.

If he is making lots of wet nappies and happy in himself (not straining to go / in pain etc) then I wouldn't worry too much. If anything about his behaviour seems odd or worrying that's what I would focus on as a warning, not poo frequency at that age.

Totally normal :) all ebf babies are different - some have tiny regular poos, others save it up for once or twice a week!

They don't go every day, especially if they are breastfed. Try not to fall into the trap of trying to make them poo.

If he's otherwise seems well and not in any discomfort then this amount of time without a poo isn't unusual. I don't think you need a doctor unless you have other concerns. You could always take him to the GPs tomorrow if you are worried, as I am sure they would always rather see you than not when it comes to little babies.

I don't think it's a problem, with mine all bf my dd's used to poo all day long at that age but my ds used to go a few days with no poo then do really smelly wind like a grown up then do have a poo day! Think they all have there own little bowel habits I wouldn't worry.

DD did the same - around 3 days. First time it happened I panicked and went to the breast feeding clinic, whereupon she decided that was the perfect place to finally relieve herself.

He's fine in himself, feeding well and lots of wet nappies. He has just done a verrry smelly trump I blamed his dad for a while thanks for the reassurance people.

How has his weight gain been until now? EBF babies who start having long gaps don't normally do so until around 4-6 weeks. So it could well just be normal for him, but if you do have any other concerns, you might want to check with a mw.

It's totally normal if ebf, both of mine often went a week between poos, sometimes had smelly wind & got a bit grumpy on "poonami day", DS 6m would scream for a minute then do a huge poo. If the poo is soft and the baby is happy & doing wees, don't stress

I just wanted to repeat again that while this is normal in older EBF babies, it is more unusual in a newborn. From Kellymom, in the 2-6wo baby section : Dirty diapers: Expect 3-4+ stools daily that are the size of a US quarter (2.5 cm) or larger. Some babies stool every time they nurse, or even more often–this is normal, too. The normal stool of a breastfed baby is yellow and loose (soft to runny) and may be seedy or curdy. After 4 – 6 weeks, some babies stool less frequently, with stools as infrequent as one every 7-10 days. As long as baby is gaining well, this is normal.
I am not wanting to worry you, if the other signs including weight gain are that he is feeding fine, then he's probably just a bit advanced! But if for example he has been slow to get back to birthweight, then might it be worth speaking to your mw for more advice?

My baby now 9 weeks started going every 2-3 days at about 2 weeks old. She gets uncomfortable the day it's due then we have an explosion! I was googling all over at the time but general gist for ebf babies is very unlikely to have constipation so unless other signs of illness then all is well. I wouldn't give formula to make baby go though as formula fed babies are more likely to get constipation.

He's gaining fine and no signs of distress or illness. Thanks for all your help

Would not worry, my eldest used to do a weekly poo, always when out and about and usually coming out of the nappy up to his armpits. I was an alarming shade of bright yellow but I was reassured anarchic pooing is perfectly normal and healthy in ebf babies

Thanks, as a pp mentioned I'm just a bit worried cos he's so young but I think everything else about him is fine
