Sorry want to ask about Green poo ?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I want to ask if anyone knows what colour the motions of an 8 week old exclusively breastfed baby should be, dd has had several green nappies with some tikka masala coloured ones in between, the last one I changed was a lovely khaki shade, is she under/over feeding or is it something I'm eating ??

Hiya honey - it's often confusing re green stools, so I googled and came up with this from the babycentre site:

"Green stools in a baby who is receiving nothing but breastmilk are a warning sign that all is not well. If your baby's stools are nearly always green and if he is not gaining weight well even though your milk supply seems fine, then it could be that he is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. As the foremilk is more dilute, with more lactose and less calories, it stimulates your baby's digestive tract to move the milk along too fast producing green, often explosive, nappies!

If you are taking him off the first breast before he comes off spontaneously, try waiting until your baby finishes the first breast to get enough hindmilk before offering the second breast; it may even be that he will only need one breast per feed. Ask a breastfeeding counsellor or infant feeding specialist to check that your baby is properly latched on and that he is managing to extract all the calorie-rich hindmilk. "

Will post a link to the page - hold on a mo...

here's the page I got that from

I think that fits with the worries you were having about dd2 and feeding too, doesn't it? Sorry not to be more comforting

Macdog · 12/11/2006 23:04

my dd was exclusive bf, we had mainly orange with a few khaki.
We concluded as she was otherwise fine it was something I'd eaten.
Keep an eye on her and have a word with your GP/HV if it persists

bensmum3 · 12/11/2006 23:10

Thanks miaou, S*, what do I do now,she isn't latching on quite right cos I can hear a clicking noise as shes feeding, we just dont seem to be able to get it right although she is finishing one side herself and definately wants the other as well. Off to read the rest of the page.

I know I asked before, but can you come away and see the b/f consultant? Just say the word and I'll call her in the morning, get her to ring you.

Try not to worry too much, I know it's hard. (((hugs)))

Found a bit more info:

"Green poo Says Vicky Pigott: 'If your baby's stools are green and frothy she may be taking in too much lactose (the natural sugar found in milk), which happens if she feeds often, but doesn't get the rich milk at the end of the feed to fill her up. It may also be caused by overfeeding or underfeeding, or is a sign that your baby has a stomach bug.'

Make sure your baby finishes feeding from one breast before offering her the other. If the symptoms last longer than 24 hours, consult your health visitor or GP to try to find the source of the problem, as it may be due to a food sensitivity, medication or your feeding routine. "

Could it be milk intolerance, bensmum? Like Ds1 and 2?

bensmum3 · 12/11/2006 23:28

I just read that too, she is bringing up more of her feed at the moment as well. Think I need to discuss this with someone that knows, but dh stuck on ml at the moment and forecast not good for this week, think I'll try standing on the scales with her again in the morning, shes not been weighed properly for 3 weeks now,but she does feel like shes still putting it on.

Did you pick up the name of the b/f counsellor from your previous thread, bensmum?

Miaou · 12/11/2006 23:31

Ah well that's good at least. Green poo can mean so many different things, not always bad news.

makemineadouble · 12/11/2006 23:32

Green poo to me always means tummy ache and crying? by the time you get the green poo the problem has nearly gone?! so what comes out has prob gone in? well must have really...only breast milk? nobody sneaked anything in even on fingertip? If just breast milk offer lots of water and talk to midwife or someone with specialist background that you trust...(this is just my opinion)

BTW are you eating anything extreme? this baby can only pass what's going in

Mercedes · 12/11/2006 23:36

My dd's poo went dark green for a couple of days around 4-6 weeks. I ended up phoning the NHS Direct and the nurse on the phone asked if I had been eating chocolate. I had received a huge box of dark chocs with truffles etc and eaten most myself. The nurse suggested that it could be the iron in the chocs was too much for the baby. I cut down on the chocs and the poo went back to normal.

makemineadouble · 12/11/2006 23:51

Mercedes...truffles hey I don't blame you...my down fall was Lamb Balti! (hide head in shame but praise excellent midwife )

hamstermunker · 13/11/2006 00:24

Why would you offer water to a bfed baby, MMAD?

I can't see anything in Bensmum's posts to suggest she needs to do anything other than bfeed.

Poo can be all sorts of colours. Green poo can mean all is not well, but it can also be normal.

What's your supply like? If she unlatches at the beginning of a feed, do you spray milk everywhere? Is the clicking because her mouth's not getting a good seal on your nipple because there's a lot of milk pouring out of her mouth?

Macdog · 13/11/2006 00:28

I've always continued bf, no matter what colour of poo was.
As I said earlier, usually something I'd eaten.
If worried, chat to GP/HV

chipmonkey · 13/11/2006 00:51

All my ds's had green poo from time to time when exclusively bf. I decided to stop worrying about it as they were always fine otherwise.

ludaloo · 13/11/2006 06:48

I was told gren poo was an indication of wind....I breast fed too...and it they do clear up so try not to worry.

ludaloo · 13/11/2006 06:50

sorry...too early to type properly obviously!!!

Green poo...

3kids · 13/11/2006 19:46

What about green poo for a ff baby?

dennya · 14/11/2006 06:46

My HV/Breast counsellor said not to worry unless green poo persisted and dd was not putting on weight. She had a week of green poo around the 8 week mark as well.I also had a few Thai green curry's at the time and I did wonder if there was a connection! I have cut back on them a little.

bensmum3 · 14/11/2006 14:39

Thankyou for the replies, some nappies are still green and some look normal, Iam going to try and get her weighed properly and talk to miaou's bf counsellor, but the messages here are very reassuring

Glad to hear you sound a bit more positive, BM. How is DD? Alert? Happy?

2labs · 14/11/2006 17:19

my ds (14wks) usually has one green poo every day (out of about 4 or 5 poos on average - no going days without for him!) around the same time, 4pm. Weird. I haven't worried about it as he's putting on weight and the others are yellowy.
