Has anyone successfully gone back to b/f from mostly formula?

I've just been looking at the info on Kellymom and it says you should start by reducing the daily supplement amount by 1oz for a while, then 2oz a day, etc. and monitor wet nappies. The problem is that the amount of formula DS takes varies wildly from day to day from around 700ml to around 900ml so I'm not sure where to start. I would really like to be able to reduce the amount of formula he is getting and at least go back to around 50/50 now that b/f is more comfortable. I'll be going back to work in a couple of months and I think my milk will disappear altogether at that point unless I can increase my supply a lot between now and then. BTW, I am supplementing due to huge problems I had with painful b/f rather than a low milk supply. DS is 15 weeks old. Any advice gratefully received.

How much BFing are you doing at the moment?

I start off every feed on the breast. He has as much as he wants from each side and then I give him a bottle. He spends 5-10 mins on each breast. He usually takes around 150ml from the bottle, sometimes less, sometimes a bit more. So that's four or five feeds a day, usually. Occasionally he gets really fussy though and won't take the breast, or won't take one side, so then I go straight to formula.
The reason I ended up mixed feeding was that I almost had to give up b/f due to so many problems. I was down to feeding him only once or twice a day and whenever I b/f him it completely messed up his routine for the rest of the day. So when it stopped hurting so much, a few weeks ago, I began starting each feed on the breast. I was giving only one breast at each feed so they got a good long break in between. For the last two weeks I have been giving both breasts.

Sorry, I posted accidentally before I had finished! I meant to say that when he has formula only, he will usually take 210-240ml.

\hmmm.... try giving less formula at each feed, then he will take more breast at the next? Or go back onto the breast after the formula to finish off, cutting back until theres no formula...?
