How long does it take for my milk to arrive

As per the subject. My baby was born on the 7th and my milk still has not come in. How much longer should it take?

really soon... is baby feeding often? x

flack · 12/11/2006 11:39

I've heard up to a week. Presumably you are still putting her to the breast when she wakes up so she gets lots of colustrum? And you're aren't using a bottle or dummies?

Is it possible it has already ? Within a week as long as you are feeding often but with dd it was a bit later that I actually felt "full".

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2006 11:43

How did the baby arrive? Natural birth faster, elective section is slower.

And the more she feeds, the sooner it will come.

It can come in without you really noticing - DS2 fed so much, that I never really got engorged.

Polarchi · 12/11/2006 11:44

It definitely has not come in. I expressed on breast just to see how much would come it and it was very thick, very yellow and not much of it. Baby seems to be on the beast all the time.

How is her latch? Is she only having breast?

flack · 12/11/2006 11:58

When the milk starts coming in it's still very yellow (I remember very happily expressing off for the milk bank to ease my discomfort). Has she started pooing yellow stuff yet and are her nappies at all wet?

I think you should talk to a midwife, tbh. They can better assess than any of us.

Polarchi · 12/11/2006 13:29

Not using a bottle or dummies and am feeding from both breasts. The birth was virginal though I was on a epidural.

He has not had any yellow poohs only black ones and he is over due for He has had a 2 wet nappies since then though.

How do you know your milk has come in? What signs should I look for?

Thanks for your help

two wet nappies is not alot at all... sounds like maybe she has a latch problem and isnt getting enough. Id see you midwife...

Quootiepie · 12/11/2006 13:46

also, is she isnt feeding well, your supply wont be stimulated enough to make the milk come in... although I think mine was yellow and creamy, before it was white.

tiktok · 12/11/2006 13:58

polarchi - contact your midwife today and ask for your baby to be seen, and also weighed on digital scales (not spring balance) to get a further piece of the jigsaw....it may be that all is well, and I don't want to shout 'fire!' but black poos and only two wet nappies in 24 hours and a delay in milk coming in are all signs that the baby is not transferring milk effectively.

This is not something to be left until tomorrow....so do call. That way, if there is a problem, then it can be fixed and it's always easier to do that sooner rather than later.

tiktok · 12/11/2006 13:59

To clarify - black poos are fine at first, but not on day 6.

terramum · 12/11/2006 14:15

How often is he feeding Polarchi

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2006 14:22

Oh good, I'm glad tiktok's appeared, she's a pro - do what she says.

Polarchi does say the baby is continually on the breast.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2006 14:23

And yeah, two wet nappies in over 24 hours is quite , and definately something that would worry me.

chubbleigh · 12/11/2006 14:36

DRINK DRINK DRINK, get lots of water into yourself, you will really know when it comes. My came overnight on the the 3/4th day, every bit of moisture was sucked from my body into my boobs and out again my the baby, so much so that my kidneys ached, baby had a lovely time of it and was weeing everywhere and I like something off of a shipwreck. You'll be amazed at how much you need to drink to keep up with it all, you cannot just rely on thirst to drive you, you have to remember to drink the water, if you wait until you are really thirsty it could be too late and you will have a banging dehydration headache.

Polarchi · 12/11/2006 14:51

Just phoned the community midwife and I was told it was fine and baby will eventually pooh. He has also just had another wet nappy.

I'm feeding him around every two to three hours and feeds are around an hour or more.

Polarchi · 12/11/2006 14:53

Just to add I had a breast feeding counsellor come round to my house yesterday who confirmed that the baby is latching correctly.

moondog · 12/11/2006 14:54

Polarchi-I never felt my milk 'come in' but fed two babies.
Let baby suck and suck.

tiktok · 12/11/2006 17:07

Good news about the other wet nappy

I am glad the community midwife was reassuring. I still think this is a situation to watch, for the reasons in my post.

Babies can do (or not do) everything you say, and things work out just fine, especially if the milk comes in and the baby then starts to take in what he needs to poo, wee and grow.

But as I say.....a situation to watch.
