Gastro-oesophageal reflux is caused by stomach acid leaking upwards (like heartburn) because the diaphragm muscle between the chest and stomach has not developed fully. It affects a lot of babies mildy and a few severely. Mostly it sorts itself out before 1yr but it can continue.

Babies with severe reflux may habitually throw-up most of their milk feeds. They may also get pains in stomach, chest or throat.

Some cases are improved by holding the baby upright for 10-20 minutes after a feed or GPs can prescribe drugs or food additives.

So now you know!
