effects of ranitidine for reflux

Not sure if this is the right place for this topic but it is kind of a feeding issue...

Can people tell me their experiences of ranitidine for their dc's reflux? My ds (14 weeks) has mostly silent reflux and has just started on ranitidine. Gave him his first dose via syringe this morning just before his feed and this look of total horror spread slowly across his face for about a minute - when he finally got around to feeding he broke off a couple of times still looking disgusted and dribbling some of the syrup. Afterwards he sicked up the most he ever has! Is this a usual effect?? Just want to knowwhat to expect really and the paed didn't mention anything about it.

We havent gone onto Ranitidine yet but....
I gave ds some calpol after his jabs a couple of weeks back and he did the exact same thing. Look of disgust followed by buckets full of sick.
I think it must be the taste and different sensation. Abit like when we eat or drink something when we're feeling off it.

Hi 2labs.
Ranitidine tastes absolutely vile.. a bit like battery acid I presume! I may be wrong but I think its an alkali.
My dd2 had severe reflux and was on many meds, this being a regular one for a long long time. It DID work wonders for her.

Have you tasted it yourself? Then you will understand why your ds pulls faces! Cannot remember the whole routine now as it is 7 yrs ago, but are you able to give them a sip of milk straight after or do you have to wait 20 mins for it to work before a feed?
Ring the Paed's secretary on monday am and ask all the questions you want answering.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I can feed him straight afterwards - though for a while he's too busy pulling the faces to be able to feed!

krimbo - can I ask what made you try your dd without the ranitidine? It's just that when I asked the paed how long we should put ds on it for he said at least 6 months. Seems like such a long time to be on meds.

No we didn't have any tests... I'm starting to think maybe I misheard and he said 'until' six months...

Thanks for your help - hope your dd continues to be cheerful and less chucky!
