1 day old baby struggling with feeding any advice?

Hi. Have a 1 day old baby I'm ff. The baby is only taking 0.5 to 1 oz every 4 hours. She seems to really struggle with the teats and tends to bring quite a bit back. Saw my midwife today who said if she doesn't improve they will bring her back in to hospital so now I am extremely concerned and very upset. She was born at 37+6 and very drowsy. I was given pethidine 2 hours before she was born as my labour went much quicker than anticipated. Does anyone have any advice on bottles to use, teat sizes? Or just any advice in general

OP I wrote down everything my baby drank from 5 days (when I stared expressing and mixed feeding) to almost a year. I can tell you that as a full term, 7lb baby she was still only taking 1-2oz at 4 weeks old, at a week old it was more like 0.5-1.5oz. She would feed every three hours, unless cluster feeding when she would take the smallest sips but for hours on end. She gained weight perfectly and is a healthy happy toddler now.
I think your midwife has scared you somewhat, and that when she visits again you need to ask her exactly what she expects your baby to be drinking and from where she has drawn her information. You can ask for a second opinion from a pead doctor if you're still concerned. As if your baby is having wet and dirty nappies, is not jaundiced and is gaining weight there is unlikely to be a problem.
Congratulations on your baby, enjoy those sleepy newborn days.

If she's a day old she should be taking around 31mls per feed

Trust your instincts...this is your third baby.

Shame on your midwife for leaving you in despair. You are doing fine and do is your baby. Hold her close and enjoy her curlinging into your chest. Please don't cry - she's just very full so hence the overspill.

If you go for Medela, make sure you buy the individual bottles as the milk storage packs (x3) & teats don't come with lids Hmm. You will know what I mean when you see them!

^ Maximum so around 1oz is fine

Thank you all for your replies. I think the baby blues are starting and it's knocking me a little. I'm in pain with afterpains and the midwife today made me feel like crap. She is alert when awake, sleeps a lot and cries when being changed so all fairly normal i think. She is in bottles called vital baby bottles. They were from boots

Another midwife here, completely agree with Viva . We would only be expecting babies to be having about 20-30 mls every 3-4 hours at this stage, anymore would be stretching the tiny stomach. Babies are also often mucousy for the first few days, and sneeze and vomit it out.
2hrly feeds will just tire you and your baby, don't let your baby go more than 4 hours without, but everything you've described sounds ok for this stage.
It's the second night tonight, so your baby will probably be awake all night and feeding constantly!

Just finished feeding her. She took just slightly over an ounce and brought up some of that again but she's not crying and seems content. I do think her stomach is just not ready for any more and all babies are different. I was concerned about her feeding so the midwife definitely hit a raw nerve. Going to try and not panic but it's so hard.

Yes im expecting her to lose some weight I know that that's entirely normal at this stage I am feeling more reassured now i felt really under pressure to push her with her milk but I won't now and I know she will just bring it back anyway. I have stopped crying now so thanks again everyone especially the replies from all the midwives on here as it's much appreciated Flowers
