Newborn Ds (just over 5 weeks) has taken to feeding hourly throughout the day & is taking 1oz at a time .
He will only cat nap through the day & if he wakes or is woken will scream blue murder for a bottle just so he can spit it out , it's like he needs to know it's their iyswim

He has been like this since Sunday , the midwife or whoever it was that does the weighing said not to worry as he is gaining weight (birth weight 7lb6 & now weighs 9lb14) , I am worried though as my happy Ds is now a screaming ball of anger & I don't know what to do as I haven't a clue what's wrong with him .

I can't leave the house as he just screams & I have to take a zillion bottles & he won't drink then unless they are hot.

Surely their is something wrong for him to have such a sudden change in behaviour & feeding pattern, before this he has been taking 2oz every 2 hours since he was born but he wasn't miserable like he is now , it's not trapped wind or colic as he is burping etc

Also at night he was feeding at 10pm then 2.30, 4.30 & then every 2 hours now it's every hour

Please anybody know what I can do ?

Have you tried changing the milk? Giving a dummy?

Pookamoo · 28/04/2015 17:37

Hi OP, have you seen the "wonderweeks" website? There is a really good chart on there which shows physical and developmental growth spurts, and "sunny" and "stormy" periods. There's a pic of it here

5 weeks is a big old stormy patch!

He will settle down again and then change his mind! Smile

hodgepodgepanda · 28/04/2015 17:39

Would changing the milk make a difference. ?

I'll have a look pook thanks

There's a big growth spurt at 6 weeks, and a developmental spurt between 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 weeks, it could well be that.

hodgepodgepanda · 28/04/2015 17:44

Ok thanks

He might just want to suck on something for comfort. Would you be prepared to give him a dummy? Some people are not happy with this suggestion but it saved my sanity with DS2 who constantly wanted to eat as a new born, breast fed but similar issue as yours, every hour for a little bit and sleeping in very short bursts. Hold your baby close to you and give him a dummy, see if it helps.

hodgepodgepanda · 28/04/2015 17:51

He has a dummy but that won't pacify him when he wakes only when he is dozing .

He just seems so miserable

Could it be reflux? My DS was like this from 3 weeks, by 6 weeks I was at my wits end, literally feeding every hour, him spitting it out and just being so miserable. Gaviscon didn't work but ranitidine did and I've had a happy baby ever since.

hodgepodgepanda · 28/04/2015 18:24

He isn't been sick but does spit quite a bit of milk out while drinking as I have to put a muslin round him so he doesn't get soaked

There's a Wonderweeks app too.

BertieBotts · 28/04/2015 18:29

I was thinking one of the comfort type milks, or perhaps a hypoallergenic milk might be worth a try?

Has he been checked for tongue tie if he's dribbling a lot of milk while feeding? I don't know if that could cause problems - perhaps causing him to take in air or something.

If your instinct is that he isn't happy, something isn't right and you need to push HV, GP, until they can tell you what it is. There are several things which can cause discomfort in small babies - if you really think he's uncomfortable, don't be fobbed off with "yes babies cry all the time". If you don't think it's normal, trust your instincts.

Just had a read of what reflux is and one of the symptoms for silent reflux is basically swallowing the sick instead of just been sick which is what he does a lot , I just thought it was wind :s

Silent reflux was one of the things I was thinking about when I wrote my post! Make an appointment with the GP, they should be able to advise.

hodgepodgepanda · 28/04/2015 18:33

Hv checked him for tongue tie (well She stuck her finger in his mouth) says he doesn't have this .
He settles easier on his side or upright .

Also he goes rigid and cries after his feeds

Sorry I'm only putting all this together now

Hmm, doesn't sound a very thorough assessment from the HV.

But anyway. Sounds like reflux is something to investigate now. I don't know if you could go to a 24 hour pharmacy now and ask for baby gaviscon, to give it a try, or whether it's on prescription? Anybody know?

hodgepodgepanda · 28/04/2015 18:46

I don't have a 24 hour chemist I can get to , I'll take him to the GP tomorrow as my health visitor isn't the best tbh
