I've left message for health visitor but posting here in hope of advice in the meantime...

DS is 5wo and EBF. I fed my DD until she was 2 and desperately want to do the same for DS but I'm having problems. The good thing is he seems to be growing lots, he's not been weighed since day 10 but at that point he had regained his birth weight and lots more on top, and since then he is filling out loads with plenty of wet and dirty nappies too, so I do think he is getting enough.

I think there is a problem with his latch though. It seemed fine to start with but for the past couple of weeks, he often makes a clicking noise, whilst sucking in lots of air, making him very uncomfortable and needing winding lots, disrupting feeds etc. I've had no nipple pain at all though. Could this be tongue tie? Would this not have been obvious earlier on though? His latch was good for the first few weeks.

I also have a very forceful let down as well, I can feel it starting then he begins choking and sucks in more air. He seems to try and fight his way through the feed rather than pull off. I wondered if his latch has been affected by the let down, if he knows the milk is going to spray with such force maybe he's anticipating it? I've no idea if that is even possible. Although I have a forceful let down, I'm worried that I'm not making as much milk as when I fed DD, as I never feel as full and don't soak anywhere near as many breastpads as I did last time.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas of what I can do to improve his latch? I really don't want to stop feeding but I'm feeling a bit rubbish and like a failure right now. I'm determined to persevere but need help!

TIA

I should add too, not every feed is like that,I've just fed him and his latch seemed good then, no clicking, sucking in lots of air and even stayed on hroughout let down with no issues...the majority of feeds aren't as simple though. He also seems to be a very efficient feeder and has been from the start, he can be finished in around 5 mins. I always feed on demand too....

It sounds like you are looking into all of the potential issues and hopefully HV will be knowledgeable, supportive and helpful. If they are not contact one of the helplines LLL or BFN and your local Infant Feeding Midwives or BF support group. Flowers congratulations on your DS

Changing your position could help your let down not be as forceful such as leaning back or lying down. Is there a breast feeding support worker attached to your nearest childrens centre? You say your little boy is putting on weight and having lots of wet and dirty nappies so he is feeding well and getting enough milk so i would say not to worry about breast not feeling full or soaking nipple pads. Well done with perserving breast feeding is hard work Smile
