Feeding Routine

Hiya
My DS is 7 weeks old and BFing mainly with the very occasional top up before bed...maybe once every 3 or 4 days. Anyway his last feed is about 11pm then he will next feed at 5 am then again about 8 or 9am. after this it goes crazy feeding every hour or hour and a half. no routine at all and the longest he goes between the end of one feed to the start of the next has been 90 mins in the day. certainly nowhere near the 4 hours that I hear of babies doing! anyway I'm happy to go with this for now, I'm feeding on demand and he seems happy. I'm just wondering what I can do to encourage him to go longer between feeds. I already offer both sides but perhaps am a bit too relaxed in letting him sleep at the breast whereas at night I wake him up until I'm certain he's full. so what else can I do to encourage him going longer?

Most bf babies don't go for more than 3hrs between feeds until well established on solids (and that's start of feed to start of feed). Have you considered that the frequent day feeding is what helps your baby sleep so well at night? It sounds like you are doing great.

I think if you attempt to limit his day feeds he will start waking at night

Fab thanks for the thoughts. I hadn't considered the long night gaps could be due to frequent feeding :)

Timings are always from start of feed rather than time between btw. Enjoy the stretches at night. Daytime should settle as he grows. Congrats on your DS.

I agree that the nighttimes gaps are most likely due to the volume consumed during that day. That said, I always found DD fed less when we were out. If we spent the day on the sofa she'd be on and off all day!

My 11 week old sleeps from about 9pm til 6am at the moment, sometime later. The trade off is that she feeds pretty much every 2 hours the rest of the time. It can get a bit much sometimes, but I figure she wouldn't be able to sleep so well at night if I tried to make her go longer between daytime feeds. Sounds like her doing really well, and so are you!

Thanks for the positive messages! we didn't have the easiest starts to bfing so I'm glad my perseverance has paid off :)
