Trouble breast feeding

Hi, I had DS2 on Saturday by ELCS. My first DS never latched on at all so I am new to breast feeding.
Ds has been on and off the boob since he was born but the pain is unbearable. My nipples are flat but do protrude under stimulation, and I had a reduction over 20 years ago but I do still produce milk and drops do come out when I squeeze.
My problem is I think ds is just sucking the nipple and not more of the areola. How do I get him to take more in? My nipples are cracked and sore, I've asked to see the BF councillor today but any tips please? I'm not in the UK.

Have you tried nipple shields?

jigglywiggly · 30/03/2015 02:57

I did with my first but as my nipples are flat they don't get sucked up enough into the shield

Yes try shields! I had two weeks of support and am still using them. The relief is instant. I was bleeding and at my wits end. 6 weeks on still using the shields.

Ahh sorry...

You're only a few days in and in my experience, the pain will normally settle within about ten days as long as your baby has a good latch.

My suggestions would be to ask your midwife or doctor to check your baby for:

  1. Tongue tie
  2. Lip tie (like tongue tie but at the top)
  3. Any neck problems or muscular pain that might be making positioning uncomfortable, these can be common but often missed after birth
  4. The latch itself. You often need to manually help the baby into the right position by manoeuvring it's head to you. There are lots of videos on YouTube that show you.

Lastly I'm sure you have it but Lanisoh cream is very good in early days. Good luck and I hope you get the help you need soon.

Thanks everyone, I have some cream too so I am putting that on. I've had his latch and tongue checked too, apparently all fine. I'm hoping when my milk comes in it will be easier, as he is just frustrated at the lack of it at the moment!
