How to train as a BF support peer - where to start?

Hi

I live in South Lanarkshire and would really love to train to become a breastfeeding support peer to new mums.

Does anyone have any information on how I go about it? Is it really time consuming? Only i am going back to work soon so don't want to take something on that I cannot fulfill.

I was just so grateful for the internet support I got when DD was a newborn but felt RL support was poor.

Thanks

Lucy

Hi Lucy, not sure if this helps but you could try contacting the La Leche league. hopefully someone else will be able to offer some better advice, i'm very interrested in doing this myself, but had little luck in finding much information. good luck.

NCT will train you as a counsellor but you have to be an "active" member....I'm training with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers to be a counsellor with them. You can train to be a "mother supporter" with them too - might be what you are after. All training is done by correspondence and self-study. If you are interested I can tell you a bit more about it....

Hi HM

Yes please, any information you can give me is greatly appreciated.

I'm a bit poorly at the moment but next wk I'll call NCT for info as well.

Thanks
Lucy

Lucy, the week of training as a 'mother supporter' with the ABM is a good stepping stone.

Give them a ring 0870 401 7711

Or check out heir website.

Hope you're better soon.

Lucy1977 · 13/11/2006 11:04

Hi

I phoned the ABM helpline and spoke to a really lovely lady. I've now emailed ABM in the hope they accept me to do the training!

Thanks for your help
Lucy

Hi again
I'm called you've given the ABM a call. If you really want to do it there should be no problems with them accepting you. I've just completed module 1 - it's really very interesting and I'm looking forward to doing the rest (8 in total). You are given about 8 weeks to complete each I think but I've done mine much quicker than that (but it was a big rush and I've yet to have it marked). Makes you realise what a fascinating subject BF is.
Good luck
Honeymum

Whoops - I meant I'm glad you gave ABM a call
