Breast milk disappeared?

My DS is 21 weeks and has been EBF. Initially I had a fantastic milk supply which was too much for him and he never managed to finish one breast let alone two. Then I over did the diet and the milk calmed down. I've started eating my 2500 calories again and the milk got back to around 80ml each side (when expressing) but he was now needing both sides to satisfy him. For some reason now, despite still eating and drinking plenty, my milk has dried up again- now when I express I'm only getting 40ml a side. The poor little mite is obviously starving too as he's still crying after feeding on both breasts twice. I can't think of anything else I've changed.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to improve it again? We go on holiday in ten days and I'd love to keep breast feeding at least until after that to keep life easier!

However much you can express, your baby will be able to take far, far more, so please don't use that as an indication of your supply. Also, what you eat is unlikely to have an affect on your supply, so please don't worry about that too Smile

What is more likely to have happened is that your body has simply adjusted to your son's needs.

How is he in himself? There are some good pointers here on whether your DS is getting enough milk. Is he being given anything else, like water, juice or solids? Have a read of this on low supply. If you can say yes to the first question, everything is ok Smile

If you want some more reassurance, are you able to get to a Bfing support group this week or how about calling one of the Bfing helplines?

Brilliant help above. Also put him too the breast more often to increase supply. Try and take a few days out to just sit and feed, drink and eat and see what happens.

Thanks, those links are really useful. He hasn't been satisfied the last few feeds, but maybe it's a growth spurt too. He's only on the second centile, and not been weighed recently but I could get him weighed again next week. Will also keep feeding him up- just exhausting every 2 hours over night!

It isn't easy but if you want to continue then you need to get your supply up again. Smile
