Failed to breastfeed DS 3 years ago, as I gave up after 3 days because I couldn't bear the pain.

Due to be induced with DD tomorrow at 40+12. She is expected to be 9lb+, so not a small baby! I really want to breastfeed but am very worried about not being able to stick at it. I know colostrum is already here but I just wondered if anyone knew of any tips to get through it or of any important things I should remember that will help?!

Thanks in advance

I was trained by BFN as s breast feeding peer supporter when ds was a baby. The method we were taught for getting a good latch and no pain was excellent. My area had s big push on training midwives, but I think some were probably set in their ways and mums came to me who hadn't had best practice help in hospital. My point is, I hope you get the help you need from the midwives but if you don't try to get to a bfn or NCT trained person ASAP. The right methods and making a few small adjustments can make all the difference. Very best wishes to you!

I couldn't bf my first as he wouldn't latch, and bf my second to 14 months so I understand your determination.

Great advice above, but just to add my thoughts:

If it still hurts after you've counted to 10, unlatch and start again.

Watch for early feeding cues - trying to latch a hungry baby is hard. All a newborn wants to do is feed and sleep. Don't worry about being used as a dummy (a dummy is a nipple replacement, after all) but do try watch/listen for swallowing.

The work with bf is all front loaded. You have to put the time and effort in at the beginning to reap the benefits of not having to wash those bottles, keep milk cold while out, hearing to the right temp etc. It can be really tough, but there's lots of support here and in real life.

Use lansinoh proactively and let fresh air get to your nipples too.
