Can I offer a breastfeed after this medicine?

Basically I had to stop breastfeeding as I was diagnosed with pnd and was prescribed Zopiclone, Citalopram and Propranolol. I stopped Zopiclone 2 days ago but am taking 80mg slow release propranolol and 20mg of Citalopram. Basically can I try to re establish breastfeeding? I have a decent supply even though I haven't fed for almost 3 weeks. I need advice but I've no idea who to ask. Many thanks.

Best thing is to call the doctor who prescribed and ask for clarification. You can do your own research on the web, but it should not over rule doctor's individual advice. You can then share what you find on the web with the doc.

Try here:

Hope you get good help soon.

I bfed on citalopram, was told it was fine by midwives and consultants etc and was supported to feed by my mental health team.

Don't know about the others. Zopiclone I have taken but not bfeeding. Don't Co sleep If you take that as it's a sedative.

There are some good resources for bfeeding and medication as tiktok has linked to. There are some others as well, will try and find a link.

You can breastfeed if you wait three hours after taking Propranolol .

5madthings · 18/03/2015 11:11

That last link has some phone numbers if you are in the UK.

Do you have a mental health team? You need the Dr's treating you to be informed so you can make an I formed choice that is right for you and your baby.

I believe you need to swap from slow release to standard propanolol, and then you can BF three hours after taking it.

Do check that with your doctor, though, and properly talk it through. 80mg is quite a high dose. I take 100mg and they are very cautious about what I can and cannot do.

tuffgingernut · 18/03/2015 11:39

Thanks all, lots of useful information. I'll start with speaking to the mental health team and g.p.

G.p can't speak to me any time soon so I asked a pharmacist who said that I can't breastfeed while taking citalopram. That's confused me as info online suggests I can. I can manage, I think without propranolol but definitely not without anti d's.

Yes Infinity is correct sorry I missed that it was slow release.

SoonToBeSix · 18/03/2015 12:05

Pharmacist can be over cautious . But no body can tell you something will definitely be safe but evidence shows your AD's are most likely fine .
