High chairs

DD is 4.5 months and we're getting stuff ready for weaning at 6 months (exciting!!) so just wondering... What do you look for when buying a high chair?

Is a booster seat better / just as good? Tempted to get one of these instead of a proper high chair, for space-saving and transport ease.

Are there any important features that some brands have but others don't?

Any favourite brands?

I went to a nearly new sale recently. A lady told me she's got a high chair at home which she's selling for £50, and very proudly told me the brand (which I can't remember now) expecting to get some reaction, but she was disappointed as I clearly had no idea how impressive it was. I didn't realise even high chairs have their Bugaboo equivalents. Please enlighten me! :)

Easy to clean is key.

We have a baby bjorn. Well designed, easy to clean, easy to use (no straps - the tray holds the baby in). It also folds away. Downside is that it is expensive!

IKEA Antilop or Stokke Tripp Trapp.

Wigeon · 11/03/2015 22:35

IKEA antilop. £12. The perfect high chair.

Bippidee · 11/03/2015 22:37

Another vote for ikea Antilop. Easy to clean, easy to dismantle and transport. And cheap!

musicinspring1 · 11/03/2015 22:39

I got a fancy high chair with dc1. It was a food trap - stuff got behind the padding, fell into the basket underneath etc. I sold it and got an ikea antilope which is still going strong for dc3.. I just 'fancied it up' with the inflatable insert. tray is still good. Highly recommend!

Haha didn't expect to get such a unanimous decision! The IKEA antilop it is then Grin

Ikea antilop the a trip trapp when baby is past the messy stage and walking to no longer needing the baby set.
Antilop is perfect for travel and camping as legs come off and you don'y need to find another chair to strap it to. And cheap enough that you could buy 2 one to leave in the car or at grand parents house

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 11/03/2015 22:44

Tripp trapp last years!!!! Snd its nice for them to eat at the table with you.

Cobo · 11/03/2015 23:09

DS is still using his Tripp Trapp, as an open chair with a high seat, at 4 years old, and will do for years to come. The idea is it can be adjusted to become a normal chair as they grow, and they sit at the table from day one, rather than being separated with a tray. Not cheap, but extremely sturdy and last years for the same child. Useless for travelling though. We had a cheap one for travelling that clips on tables (not great though, as tables are often too light or wrong shape for it) and one of those cloth things thst ties to a normal chair.

Ikea antilop here, light, easy to clean, cheap. Perfect high chair Smile

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 11/03/2015 23:33

Tripp Trapps are great but not lightweight for moving between rooms or into the garden (no topple risk though) as they get older. No tray so they sit up to the table with you. Occasionally a tray would have been handy though when you want to give then some frozen garden peas to play with Grin

Antilop is hard to beat for value and ease of cleaning plus you can attach a tray if you wish. Big downside for me is that the design means you can't tuck it under the table and the child's lap is exposed so lots of dropped food. We bought one last year and just left it out with the garden furniture all summer.

Buglife · 12/03/2015 09:27

Antilop! I love it. I also have the Mamas and Papas baby snug seat where you can add a tray so he can eat off that too.

0ddsocks · 12/03/2015 09:30

We have an antilop for the baby, then a tripp trapp for the toddler

Just in case you didn't get the message, go for the Antilop. You can even put it in the dishwasher! We had one, plus a Tripp Trapp, and though I loved the TT, food did stick in the nooks and crannies which was a pita.

GoooRooo · 12/03/2015 15:31

Another Antilop here. You can't go wrong.

squizita · 12/03/2015 15:51

Grin Antilop. Does anyone actually not have one?

NickyEds · 12/03/2015 15:54

Antilop here too. Fantastic design and easy to clean. Have a look at the high chairs in pubs/cafes/soft play places that you go to- the padded ones are are always revolting because they're such a pig to clean!

BossWitch · 12/03/2015 15:57

Antilop here! As a result of mn advice, too. Recommend getting the inflatable pad bit, pushes them further forward in the seat so that less food ends up in their lap.

bonzo77 · 12/03/2015 16:02

Antilop here too. Only downside for me was the lack of proper harness, but it's easy enough to attach generic reins. Then once they're ready to eat at the table I have Hauck Alpha, which is like Tripp Trapp but was on offer on Amazon.
