Oversupply/fast letdown freaking out baby

My 15 day old ds has started acting very fussing when latching on - coming on and off and getting sprayed in the face! My supply is plentiful and I think my letdown is fast whic I'm assuming is freaking him out. I'm having to express top ups because he had an initial slow weight gain which I'm guessing is behind the over supply. Is there something I can do to help him latch? It's becoming quite stressful especially during the night feeds. Is this something that is likely to settle down by itself, or that he'll get better at handling as he gets older/bigger?

Do you have a local baby cafe you could go to for help? I've found them so brilliant.
Also really helpful stuff on Kellymom on oversupply/ forceful letdown: kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/
I have similar prob but not with relatching, just with fussing & crying (& spitting up) in response to flow.

PS your milk supply might well regulate itself by about six weeks so that the oversupply is less - my health visitor told me this. At 9 weeks my letdown still bothers baby sometimes though.

I had similar problems with a forceful letdown and oversupply in the early days. I found that expressing a small amount off before baby fed and then popping her on helped. Also, the best piece of advice I got was to think about positioning when feeding and to try laid-back breastfeeding. Basically, you lay down, get yourself comfy with pillows etc, then you pop baby on top of you, whichever angle is comfy for you both, and baby finds its way to the breast and latches. Feeding this way means gravity is against the milk and letdown is not so forceful. This really helped us have more comfortable feeds.

Here is an NCT leaflet about it www.nct.org.uk/sites/default/files/related_documents/Laid-back%20Breastfeeding.pdf
