6wo old DD seems in pain at night - what could be wrong?

DD increasingly seems in pain at night.

She us a chilled baby and a decent sleeper - norm is one 4 hour stretch followed by one or two 2/3 hour stretches a night. She is EBF.

But after putting her down at night, she has an unsettled period. She will feed to sleep and go all floppy and contented over my shoulder. When I put her down in her cot she is fine and barely stirs. But then shortly after, she will have this "sleep episode", waking herself up grunting and breathing heavily. She often draws her feet up too. It sounds gastrointestinal to me. Also often sounds like she has vommed a bit in her mouth as she sort of chews it. She normally likes a dummy but will refuse it at thus time.

She clearly wants to sleep, as she doesn't cry really, is just noisy and unsettled and will send herself straight back to sleep repeatedly after startling awake with each pain.

So she's done this for weeks but last night and tonight have been worse. Normally it lasts for aboutr 20min and then she's worked thru it. But now, it's waking her up an hour later, then again later - but she doesn't seem ready to feed.

I am worried as the disruption is meaning none of us get any quality sleep. What to do? Is it reflux? Am I misreading hunger cues, is she getting hungry a mere hour after night feed?

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Sounds like trapped wind. We found Cole if very helpful, it helped him clear the wind and he slept much better.

That should say we found colief helped.

Okay! Don't know if this is relevant but she also farts a lot at this time. Would that fit?

Also doesn't seem to do it in the day - it's just a night thing.

Thanks :)

My DS is the same. Not sure what is is but think it is wind. He never burps after a feed when I try to wind. I don't think he can be in that much pain though as he doesn't wake up or cry just squirms, grunts and farts. He is also ebf.

Your DD sounds just like my DS who is just shy of six weeks, although he does also vomit after each feed. He has been diagnosed with reflux and I saw the health visitor today who witnessed an episode (previously I'd just been describing it) and told me it looks like classic reflux. His started as nights only which I attributed to him being on his back for an extended period and it aggravating it. Now he's at it during the day too. He brings up plenty of wind but winding doesn't help stop the writhing and grunting.

We were prescribed infant gaviscon which took the edge off the sickness but not the pain. We've now been given a dairy free formula to try to rule out an intolerance. If you are going to go to the GP you might find it helpful to video an episode. I had a bit of a fight initially to be taken seriously as he is still gaining weight and healthy, just in near constant pain poor thing.

Butternut same, I try winding diligently after every feed but she doesn't bring much up.

Enigma sorry you poor LO is in pain so much. I saw the HV today who said try Colief and tipping the end of the cot up a bit. However she's been cranky and wanting a lot of milk today so am now wondering if the night waking is in fact 6w growth spurt!

If it is wind trying carrying him in a sling for some of the time during the day, as being upright helps.

Definitely gas. My DS did this and I honestly thought he was dying, ha! It is completely normal, though - it's them getting used to the feeling of their bowels moving and working. I bought an expensive anti-reflux wedge which obviously didn't help (reflux was never an issue), but Infacol helped him burp more easily. He just grew out of the grunting and straining, though, I'm afraid. He is 11 weeks now and sleeps silently for up to seven hours, so don't despair Smile I do feel your pain, though; it is almost impossible to ignore the noises - they sound so painful!
Another thing to try is baby massage. It really helps get the gas out!!
