Help! I've forgotten how to breastfeed

Hi - DS (DC2) was born yesterday. I fed DD for 15 months so felt a bit complacent about doing it again - but now I realise I've forgotten everything about feeding a newborn. Can you remind me please?

Obviously my milk's not in yet but things that are already leaving me scratching my head are:
It hurts when he latches on. Don't remember that from last time. Would it be a latch issue? Or is it normal?
He will feed and fall asleep then 10 mins later seem quite distressedâ?¦ is that more hunger (he's 9lb 6oz btw)? Do I just need to wait for proper milk to fill him up a bit? Or is it a sign he's not latching/sucking properly? Or wind?
Talking of which - when/how do you wind a sleeping baby (when every movement wakes him up and I'd like him to stay asleep!) Do I even need to at this point?

Andâ?¦ what else have I forgotten?! Anyone who has done it recently please give me your advice! Thank you.

Hurting - can be a latch issue but mine hurt like fuckery every feed for the first fortnight and latch was perfect. Will you have a midwife or health visitor check in the next couple of days? If so get them to check your latch.

I didn't bother winding in the very early days, dd didn't seem to need it. Experiment with no winding and see if it works?

My baby was an absolute boob monster for aaaaages, I would always just shove a nip in regardless of how recently she'd fed. I think in the early days the frequent suckling is one of the cues that helps your milk come in. So I'd let him latch and suck whenever he wants.

Get someone to look at the latch ... but when mine was checked I was told it was ok, but hormones can make them mighty tender at first!

...oh and my dd couldn't burp very well to start with so sometimes grumbled after a feed. We used infacol in the end. I'd also feed again as it seemed to push it through to enormous farts.

Congratulations!!
I remember it hurting like hell... Sounds normal to me Grin

What kind of pain? It could be latch or it could be your let down, that always hurts me. Feeding is constant in newborns and will stay that way for about 12 weeks. I found that one feed would pretty much run into the next and it felt like I did nothing but feed. My dd wasn't very windy and I definitely never woke her to wind.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. Had the latch checked today - it looked fine she said, but he has a 'strong suck' so maybe it's just something that will wear off. Hope so!
