Baby won't take cold/room temperature formula - help!

Hi, my 17 wk DD has recently gone onto formula bottles. I've discovered three things. 1) she will only drink it if it is nice and warm. 2) If I stop mid bottle (to wind her for example) it can be a nightmare to get her started again. 3)she NEVER finishes her bottle in one go - she takes most of it then refuses the last few ounces until half an hour/45 mins later.

I know you are not supposed to reheat formula but would a few seconds in the microwave to warm up the last little bit be really dangerous? (My DH has done this a few times). This would save me from having to double up on making bottles with smaller amounts.

Id she likes it heated then heat it. Do not force her to drain the bottle - it is not a bad thing for milk to be left. I wouldn't offer her it again later - she is telling you that she has had enough when she doesn't finish it. Making a baby empty a bottle can lead to them getting fat. Also don't worry about wind - wait till the end if she wants. If she has a problem mid feed she will let you know.

i give my 6wk ds a bottle of formula at night and often he has a top up bottle of breast milk in the evening or after lunch - he won't take it room temperature either (although he used to not mind), so when we get towards the end of the feed i put it in a bowl of very hot water while i change his nappy and it seems to get it warm enough for him to take more. he also wants a break in the middle of a feed - if i make the mistake of putting him down without waiting for him to take the second half he will wake again within the hour. so a whole feed takes us about an hour start to finish.

would it be easier just to give him a breastfeed then? rather than faffing with the bowl and what not.

Hmmm, hadn't realised that I might be overfeeding her. I'll see how she goes without giving her the last bit. This morning she took 7oz in one go which was great so fingers crossed!

Nope, still got a snacker! She is def not taking enough on the first go (crying less than 2 hrs later cos she is starving as she has only taken half her bottle). At least if I give it to her in two sittings I know she'll last about 4 hrs.

ss id def a snacker! What a good term for it. i love reading mums net. Makes me realise I'm not hte only one with a weird baby! joking! dd took ages to start taking a bottle "properly" and even now has to have 2 goes at every one. She never finishes one but that's ok cos I worry if she dos that she's not had enough. She takes wildly varying amounts each day and each feed. is nuts but there we are! dd will only take formula warm and sometimes pretty warm at that. but then have you tasted the stuff? yuck! at least warm it passes for something like horlicks! Since starting to wean dd onto a little bit of solids (few tsp) she now gets way more excited at sight of a spoon than a bottle. btw i may get shot down for thisa but hey. i make each bottlew fresh so that when it does cold half way through i don't feel so bad for dunking in hot water to warm as it's not be reheated before!

well alibobble, glad i'm not alone then! i've had a total nightmare getting her to take the bottle. i've found the MAM bottles and teats worked the best. if i have another baby i'll get them used to it much earlier! good idea to make smaller bottles and i agree about the minging-ness of fomula. i nearly get 'the boke' pouring the cold unwanted stuff away every time!
