New WHO charts - Its official my baby is huuuuge

I thought the WHo charts based on breastfed babies would be interesting but when I tracked my dd last weighed at exactly 6mo 3 wks ago (she was on 99.9%ile) - she was off the scale... so if these charts were being used would I be under scrutiny for producing a porker??

TBH I don't worry as I know for my family at least dd is normal - we tend to make giant babies my teeny weeny pocket sized MIL is a bit surprised by her tall weighty grandchildren. But these charts are based on pop averages so any competantHV should surely be looking at the 'norms' for the babies families? So why to we get such hassle at weigh in's - I do find it interesting seeing where my baby is on the chart and I am expecting a drop off in her weight as I introduce solids and she becomes more mobile - In the meantime I am finding it impossible to find suitable baby clothes to fit her big bum (esp when she is wearing 'real nappies') when you get to 12-18m the clothes start being longer in limb and less rooomy for the bum - anyone know where they hide the big baby clothes??

H and M is quite good.
DS1 was a bit of a porker too, I was glad I was bf him cos health visitor said 'If you were bottle feeding, I would tell you to reduce the amount of milk he was having'!
Cos I was bf she realyl couldn't tell me to do that, which was fine by me. I knew he was healthy. BTW - He is now 5 and although very tall for his age he is skinny as a rake!

i've always found asda/george clothes to be on the large side

JunkInMyTrunk · 25/10/2006 15:31

mini mode @ boots has always fitted my dd2 well over her real nappies

liquidclocks · 26/10/2006 20:16

DS1 was FF and always huge, DS2 is one month, BF, and going the same way but even more so! We never found a solution with DS1 save rolling up trouser legs and sleeves.

At least ou can get dresses!

Our DD is only 15 months old and wears now 2/3 yrs old clothes(she is tall as well). She was breastfed until she was 6months old, she loves her solid food (started at 4 monhts old), she started walking at 13 months old and she hasn't lost her chubby legs yet!!! She wears real nappies too, so 2/3 years tights and dresses are usually the most comfortable... She has never been able to wear some lovely french clothes my family sent me (The sizing over there doesn't match DD at all!!), but like other mentioned, some english brands are the best!

Ds is wearing large 6-12 mo or 9-12 mo size clothes at 5 mo - haven't had him weighed for ages as he looks OK to me and he seems more long than fat, alhtough he's getting chubbier now. He's been steadily on the 90th cantile for length yet Dp and I are both short and come from long lines of short people, so we're a bit puzzled about it - it seems he's well outside the 'right' size range. The HV and doctor don't seem to be worried either, perhaps they worry more about babies that are too small?

Toothyboy · 27/10/2006 22:27

Nope, they don't worry about babies that are small either!! Ds2 is 8 months, on the 0.4th centile, just fitting into 3-6 month clothes (some are a bit loose)! He's followed the same line since about 6 weeks (before that he was just trying to reach the bottom centile).

The way I see it, some babies are big, some are small, and as long as they're healthy and developing OK, then let's just enjoy them!!

crimplene · 28/10/2006 23:47

Maybe the whole weighing thing is actually more of a pretext to see the baby naked to check for bruises and things- especially later on - rather than anything to do with weight if they don't worry either way? Perhaps they only worry if the baby stops growing?

Flamebat · 28/10/2006 23:51

Where's these charts then?

H&M are great for big bums (DD is a mini J-Lo... and was in cloth). Other than that she was in boys jeans (we just went with a skater look!)

crimplene · 29/10/2006 00:11

They're here: www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/en/

I fixed the nappy problem the other way round by using Disana tie-on nappies - they're v slimline so bum size isn't a problem. Also very cheap.

crimplene · 29/10/2006 00:14

I'll try to make that linkl work \link{http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/en/}

crimplene · 29/10/2006 00:14

Sorry, can't get it right

Flamebat · 30/10/2006 14:54

Hmmm... checked, and DS is in about the same place as on the charts in his book. Is that wrong???

jellybrainsalloverthewall · 30/10/2006 15:13

I don't know about the boy charts Flame as I only looked at the girl ones but I will check out my ds position too - depending on what age your ds is maybe the WHO chart will agree with current charts at some stages and not others - I am expecting my dd's upward trend to settle once weaning and crawling are established as she starts using up some of her stored calories...

In the meantime I will continue to squeeze her scrumptious booty into these tight clothes - I do find boys clothes fit better (like her hand me downs from ds) but it is nice to put her in something without a truck on it occasionaly I get fed up with people saying 'oh what a lovely baby boy' etc...
