Breastfeeding to sleep

My EBF 5 week old boy tends to be breastfed to sleep. We have a sleep fighter on our hands and we really struggle to get him to nap in the day so he often falls asleep on the boob which is the only way he'll go down (except for being taken for a walk in the pram)

So far this has been ok but I've just started expressing a a bit so my DH can help with feeds and I can see this now causing a problem. Last night DH fed him at 10, he guzzled the bottle down then cried quite badly so we put him on the boob and he fell asleep. I have to wait for him to be in a deep sleep before putting him down otherwise he wakes up and cries and we have to start all over again (as has just happened at 3am zzzzzzzz!)

At some point I'm going to want to go out at night and I'm worried he won't sleep while I'm not here. Anyone have any tips to help break this cycle?

No advice to offer you as my boy is only 2 weeks, but experiencing same thing so caught my attention!

This is completely normal. When they're a bit older they can learn to go to sleep other ways but at 5 weeks old it is just not worth stressing about.

Sounds perfect- just blissful nodding off into milky dreams. Enjoy it!

Another one who agrees... Enjoy it while you can :) it all changes so quickly!

I'm still doing it at 8mo, it works so I don't see a need to change it Smile

My DS was like this, and it was mainly just really useful - makes it easy to get him to sleep most of the time. I went out in the evenings sometimes, and DP just had to have him on his lap for the evening, no problem once in a while. After a few months he settled into a bit of a routine and I could feed to sleep at around 7 before going out.

I agree with other posters. At the point where you want go out in the evening i'd worry about it then! DS feel asleep on the boob for 5.5 months until I stopped bf then fell asleep with his bottle (except for naps after dropping feeds) until he was nearly 11 months. We only really stopped it then so we could brush his teeth after his evening feed. In general as they get older dad, bottle and rocking will settle them and if not.... well it's only once in a while (unless you're planning a hectic social life!).

I feed dd before bed and therefore often to sleep.

I discovered by accident one nap time, when my DM was giving her expressed milk (so I could bleach the mildew off the shower curtain, oh the glamour!) that if the routine was "as usual", bottle milk and gentle rocking worked fine. Smile
Came back all ready for a crying overtired baby and found her asleep.

...Mine is 5 months, 4 when she became all about milk and any old cuddle. Grin

I fed mine to sleep every night until around 6 months when he got too heavy to put down without waking him.

TheScenicRoute · 02/03/2015 07:25

Does skin to skin cuddles help?

What about in the daytime. My LO really fights his sleep and on some days he hardly naps at all. Yesterday he had 20 mins sleep between 9.30am and when he went to bed at 7. We basically spent the whole day trying to get him to go to sleep which was exhausting and stressful. The only way he tends to go to sleep even in the day is if I feed him to sleep or we push him around in the pushchair. We can tell he's tired as he keeps yawning and he eventually gets really cranky. Any ideas?
