WTF is wrong with my boob? (Extended BF)

Yesterday, while feeding DS2 (2), my "good" boob was hurting. I just thought he was maybe feeding too hard, and didn't think anything of it. It hurt afterwards, too, though, which was weird.

I took some iboprofen.

This morning, there's a tender spot on the breast, but it's deep down. And it feels lumpy, not like a big lump, but like there are peas or something in there. No red spot. I feel slightly unwell, but I've felt slightly unwell for a while. The baby seems ok, although there was lots of yellow goo coming from both eyes yesterday.

Is this thrush? I don't think it's a blocked duct or similar ...

Do I have to see a GP?

Oh, my nipples don't hurt. Does this mean it can't be thrush?

I will call my local BFC friend later. Or maybe SMS her. But ideas would be good.

I guess when DS2 gets up I'll feed him with his chin pointing at the lump, and see if that helps.

Does ds have thrush in his mouth? (little white spots)
It does actually sound like a blocked duct...Thrush is really itchy and your ds would have it too I suspect.
If it is a blocked duct...just keep going and it should clear.
Any help?

Sounds very like a blocked duct to me. What makes you think it isn't? I suffered with blocked ducts a lot, and this is how it felt - discomfort, a pea sized lump or lumps in the breast, and you start to feel like crap.

Heat, massage, and lots of feeding / expressing from that side usually fixes it, but it's often a sign you are doing too much...

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 07:42

Oh - I think you change position so that ds's nose is on the same side as the lump, to help clear that side. I think. It's either that or the other way round

NotQuiteCockney · 24/10/2006 07:59

Chin on the lump side is what helps, so the chin massages the lump.

Yeah, not itchy at all, so not thrush. Fine, I'll feed lots.

I've had blocked ducts before, and they generally have always been right under the surface, not deep down.

The last however many weeks have been insane, but I do have a morning off booked, a lovely nanny who the kids adore is coming to take them out for a bit.

And next week, DS1 won't be here, and DS2 will be at the co-op every day, so it will be a "week off".

(Oh, and at MIL's "request", I got both boys' hair cut yesterday ... have decided to be "confused" about the request, and get mine done too, though ;-) )

Should have known better than to advise you on breatfeeding

after all you have met Jack Newman

I hope it clears up, whatever it is. I would phone your friend, in a bit, see what she says.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/10/2006 08:27

Well, DS2's had a good feed, some of which was done properly (chin next to lump, or me massaging lump ... both of which he objected to). And it does feel better.

I know about the BF problems I've had - know nothing about thrush though, as I've never suffered.

I've just been using fingers, widely spaced. Only, of course, I am Not Allowed to touch my boobs while feeding. I think I've mostly cleared the lump, and will work on it some more, next time I feed. I think it's ok.

Thanks for the reassurance re: thrush. I was really not looking forward to talking to a GP about this!

How is it now, crazy foreign lady?

NotQuiteCockney · 24/10/2006 22:21

Oh, totally cleared, must have been blocked duct.

Annoyingly, something else is wrong with me, I am nauseated and dizzy, possibly from not eating well, the last few days? Not sure. Am hoping it will clear by tomorrow, as I am planning to bike to Covent Garden on a quest for shoes I can wear with skirts, but that won't make my feet hurt. We have a family party on Sunday, and it would be nice to wear a skirt.
